RENO News - 4/14/21

Ryan Evans

Good Afternoon,

I hope everyone is having a great week. Please read through today's email for important Reno Aquatic Club information.

Weather at Idlewild

It looks like we’ll have one more practice with unsettled weather before it warms up again. As long as there isn’t thunder/lightning, we will plan to swim. The lifeguards do closely monitor the conditions and will close the pool if there is lightning in the vicinity.

If practices get canceled or there is a change, we will do our best to communicate any changes via email as soon as possible.

Group Parent Meetings

Next week, we will have group parent meetings for many of our groups. These meetings will give our coaches a chance to discuss the plan and goals for each group as we head into summer. These meetings will take place in the grass outside the fence of the northwest corner of the pool — roughly between the pool and the Rose Garden.

Here’s the schedule:

Mini Plus and Blue — 6:15 PM on Tuesday, April 20

White and Orange — 5:30 PM on Wednesday, April 21

Silver — 4:30 PM on Monday, April 19

Pre-Senior — 5:30 PM on Monday, April 19

For Mini RENO parents, Coach Susan will have a meeting in the coming weeks. Details will be announced shortly.

For National and Senior parents, I am tentatively planning a meeting on Monday, April 26 at 5:30 PM. I will reach out and confirm the day and time next week.

Open Water Junior Nationals

Reno Aquatic Club’s Aidan Pflieger will be competing in USA Swimming’s Junior National Open Water Championship in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Aidan will be swimming in the 7.5K race on Sunday.

Good luck and swim fast, Aidan!

High School Swimming

The Northern Nevada high school swim season starts this week! RENO has 40+ swimmers that will be competing for their respective high schools. Although this season will be a little different than normal, I am looking forward to our swimmers having a chance to compete.

TYR Pro Swim - Mission Viejo

Reno Aquatic Club’s Emma Karam had a very successful weekend at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo, CA. Several Olympians including Nathan Adrian, Caeleb Dressel, Katie Ledecky, Ryan Lochte, and many more were competing. It was a valuable experience for Emma to race against the world’s best.

It was also a great experience for me as a coach. Several top coaches were in attendance including the head coaches for Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics. I was able to interact, observe, and learn from many of the best coaches in the sport.

The highlight of the meet was Emma qualifying for Wave 2 for Olympic Trials. Earlier this year, USA Swimming decided to split Olympic Trials into two meets due to COVID. The original Olympic Trials time standards qualified swimmers for Wave 1 which is set to take place in early June in Omaha, Nebraska. USA Swimming released faster time standards for the Wave 2 meet which will take place in mid-June in Omaha.

Swimmers can only qualify for the Olympic Team in Wave 2. So with Emma achieving her Wave 2 time standard in the 200m backstroke, she will now be competing at the main Olympic Trials this summer in both the 100m and 200m backstrokes.

Congratulations to Emma for a great meet!

Although RENO just had one swimmer compete last weekend it was a success for the entire team as we continue our effort of “putting RENO back on the map!”
