RENO News - 5/6/21

Ryan Evans

Good Morning,

I apologize for the delay in my weekly email. I was hoping entries for the Carson Tigersharks meet would have been open by now but they aren’t. I do believe they’ll be opening very soon, so I will send a separate email when entries open. Please read through the rest of today’s email for important Reno Aquatic Club news.

Conejo Swimworks - Monday, May 17

Conejo Swimworks, our swimsuit/apparel vendor, will be in Reno on Monday, May 17 from 5 - 7 PM at Idlewild Pool. They will be able to size your child for our custom RENO suits and apparel.

After their visit, they will open the online store for orders. More information to come.

Carson Tigersharks Swim Meet - May 28-31

The next local swim meet will be the annual Intermountain Classic hosted by the Carson Tigersharks. Entires are not open yet, but if you plan to have your child participate please be ready to register as soon as entries open. I will send an email when registration opens.

RENO Gamble - June 18-20

Reno Aquatic Club’s annual summer swim meet is set for June 18-20. More information will be available in the coming weeks, but please mark your calendars. We would like to see our entire team participate and all of our parents volunteer to help make the meet successful.

Summer Swim Meet Schedule

Establishing a swim meet schedule for summer continues to be a challenge. In the past, a majority of our meets took place in California. With a lot of uncertainty in California it’s been difficult to create a concrete schedule.

I am working each day to try and find swim meet options for all of our swimmers in other states, but, unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck yet. I will keep everyone posted if I can find more meets for RENO.

A positive is the local meets are on track to happen.

Here is the tentative meet schedule for RENO:

  • High School Regionals - Carson City - May 21 - 22 (high school swimmers)
  • Carson Tigersharks Intermountain Classic - Carson City - May 28 - 31 (all can go)
  • Olympic Trials - Omaha, NE - June 13 - 20 (qualifying times required)
  • RENO Gamble - Reno - June 18 - 20 (all can go)
  • Swimming at Altitude Short Course Meet*** - South Lake Tahoe - June 25 - 27 (all can go)
  • Summer Sectionals*** - Roseville, CA - July 15 - 18 (qualifying times required)
  • NNA Silver State Championships - Reno - July 17 - 18 (all can go)
  • Western Zone Senior Championships*** - Clovis, CA - July 27 - July 31 (qualifying times required)
  • Futures Championships*** - Santa Clarita, CA - July 28 - July 31 (qualifying times required)

***These meets are on the calendar, but they are in California and are pending an update to the California youth sports mandate.

Spring Cup Results

Reno Aquatic Club had a great meet in Des Moines, Iowa at the USA Swimming TYR Spring Cup. This meet featured several of the top 18-under swimmers from around the country.

Originally, we were schedule to compete in Irvine, CA, but we had to switch plans last minute. Despite the changes it was a great meet that allowed our swimmers to race against teams from the Midwest that we normally don’t swim against.

RENO had seven swimmers with qualifying times. Four of the seven weren’t able to make it to the meet (Ian Belflower, Addison Crain, Owen Otuafi, Ella Palmer), but the three that did represented Reno Aquatic Club very well.

Here are the highlights:

Katelyn Buono: Best times in the 100m and 200m backstroke, new team record in the 17-18 200m backstroke, qualified for A final in 200m backstroke, new USA Swimming Junior National time standards in 100m and 200m backstroke.

Emma Karam: 1st place in the 200m backstroke, 2nd place in the 100m backstroke, and best time in the 200 IM

Aidan Pflieger: 5th place in the 1500 freestyle, best times in the 200m IM, 400m freestyle, and 1500m freestyle, and new Sectional time standards in the 200m IM and 400m freestyle

Way to go, RENO!

RENO Records

At the Spring Cup, Katelyn Buono set a new 17-18 RENO record in the 200m backstroke. Her time of 2:19.73 broke Dana (Baum) Hardt’s record of 2:20.92 set in 1999. Dana’s two kids, Jaxon and Piper, currently swim for Reno Aquatic Club.

In the 2020/2021 season, RENO swimmers have set 23 team records.
