Winter Program

The RSTA Winter Swim program offers swimmers the opportunity to continue their swim development during the colder months (September through May). The program is hosted at the Reston Community Center. Coaches work with swimmers to improve their stroke technique and endurance. The program is broken into three sessions: Fall (September - December), Winter (January - March), and Spring (March - May).

In following guidelines established by USA Swimming and adhering to Virginia reopening plans, we will be offering Winter Swim in a modified fashion starting Sunday, September 27th and running through December 6, 2020. Winter Swim will then resume in January after the winter holidays.

Important details regarding Fall 2020 session procedures:

  • At this time, we are only allowing 3 swimmers per lane per practice — one at the shallow end, one in the middle, and one at the deep end.
  • We will not have any coaches in the water as we have in the past; coaches will coach from the pool deck only.
  • Therefore, it is important to note the following:
  • We will require that all participants:
  • have participated in past RSTA Summer and/or Winter Swim programs,
  • be able to swim on their own, unassisted for the full length of the pool throughout the entire practice, and
  • be able to comfortably and proficiently swim all four competitive strokes.
  • We will run evaluations for all swimmers at the start of the session in each class so that we can properly place them in their respective lanes. It is critical that we have swimmers of similar skill and speed in each lane to keep the practices working successfully and ensure social distancing. It is possible this could result in age groups being mixed within lanes.
  • If we determine that a swimmer is not going to be able to adhere to this policy or does not maintain proper distancing and etiquette during the practice, the swimmer may be asked to leave the program.
  • Due to restrictions imposed by the RCC, the parents of Winter Swim participants will not be allowed to enter the pool deck nor remain at all inside the facility during the practices. If families are concerned about leaving their child without an ability to observe, it might be best to wait until the Winter/Spring 2021 session when hopefully less restrictions might be in place.
