I began coaching immediately after graduating from high school to give back to the program and sport that has shaped the man I am today.  I had a close relationship with my high school coach and take coaching to be much more than just trying to win games.  I have been in this program along with Coach Alex for so long because I truly care about growing water polo in the South Bay and teaching our athletes the right way to do things. It has been an absolute joy to see the growth this club has had since I began coaching here and I am excited to see where else we can go!

Alex Heck 12U Coed

When Alex was in seventh grade, a friend persuaded him to try out water polo as a means to get out of junior high P.E. Alex immediately fell in love. He soon joined South Bay United Water Polo Club (then Kia Water Polo Club) to develop his skills further. At El Segundo High, Alex led his team to the CIF Finals on two separate occasions. During his junior and senior years, Alex was an All-CIF (third and first-team) recipient and Academic All-American.

During his freshman year of college, Alex attended the University of San Diego, where he captained the club water polo team. One year later, while at El Camino College, Alex earned All-South Coast Conference, First-Team honors. Alex then transferred to Loyola Marymount University (LMU) for his junior and senior years, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Political Science. In 2009, while still a junior, Alex began coaching for South Bay United Water Polo Club.

Coaching at nearly every age group, Alex developed a deep love for sharing the sport of water polo with others. Three coaching highlights of Alex's are traveling to the University of Michigan to compete in the Turbo Cup Finals in 2012, finishing 12th nationally at the 2017 Junior Olympics, and--best of all--bringing home a gold medal after the 2018 Junior Olympics at Stanford University.

Alex's love of coaching led him to pursue a career in education. In 2012, Alex began teaching at American Martyrs School in Manhattan Beach.  In 2015, Alex returned to LMU and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Today, Alex teaches fifth-grade in El Segundo.

When Alex is not on deck or in a classroom, he is cherishing his time with his wife, son, and daughter.
