Brian Heaton Head Coach (Platinum/Gold/Silver)

Coach Brian Heaton begins his 5th consecutive season with the Makos.  He brings 22 years of club and high school coaching experience to the pool.  Coach Heaton swam as a club and high school swimmer in Indiana during the late 80's.  He began coaching at a YMCA at the age of 18 and later became the head high school coach at Terre Haute North Vigo High School in Terre Haute, IN.  Along with his high school coaching duties, he started the Terre Haute Torpedoes Swim Club in 1997.  He built this USA club to over 200 athletes and had several athletes qualify for USA Sectional meets, Junior Nationals, US Open and Senior National competition.  Coach Heaton has coached several High School All-Americans and seen his athletes move on to compete at the collegiate level.  He moved to Anderson, SC in 2007 and joined the Makos staff for four years helping to build a solid swimming foundaton at the Y.  After a brief sabbatical from coaching, he returned to the Makos in 2015 and has led the program to a Top 5 finish at the YMCA Upper Southeastern Regional as well as coaching six athletes to the YMCA National Championships.  Coach Heaton is a social studies teacher at McCants Middle School. He resides in Anderson with his wife Quincy and their daughter Kyle.   

Madison Wesley Assistant Coach Bronze/Aquatics Director

Madison Wesley begins her third year with the Makos as a coach.  She is currently the Aquatics Director at the Anderson Area YMCA.  She has extensive experience in swimming instruction, water safety and public relations.  She will be coaching the Bronze group. She has also worked with the other age group levels during her time with the Makos.  She enjoys working with youth members in all capacity at the Y either through aquatics or through coaching youth soccer.  Madison also has a deep love of furry creatures and is known to take many stray or injured animals under her care.

Sarah Beach Assistant Coach (Blue 2/Yellow)

Coach Sarah Beach begins her fifth consecutive year with the Makos coaching staff.  Sarah gained her love of swimming as an athlete for the Makos.  She also swam for Anderson Swim Club during her age group years.  She enjoys spending time with community youth and working through programs at Newspring Church.  She is currently a student at Anderson University and serves as one of the head lifeguards for the Anderson YMCA.  

Debra Sanders Assistant Coach Yellow

Debra joins the Yellow Group for her third Fall season with the team.  She has been a triathlete for the past 10 years and has an avid love of swimming. She developed a desire to help other athletes improve their swimming skills and recently attained her US Masters swimming certification.  Always willing to learn more and impart that knowlege, Debra is also a YMCA Siwmming Official.  In addtion to helping the Makos, she served as head coach of the team at the Bell Family YMCA in Hartwell over the summer.

Adam McKenzie Assistant Coach (Gold/Platinum)

Adam has been a coach coach with the Makos the last two years. He began swimming summer league at age 11 in Durham, NC.  Over the next seven years, he competed at several Age Group Sectionals and Junior Nationals championships.  He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our Gold swimmers. Adam attended college at Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering. In college he gained addiotional competitive experience as a varsity rower, and coaching experience as a men's rowing coach. Outside of coaching Adam works as an engineer for Electrolux and competes in local masters swim meets. 

Bethany Lefeber Assistant Coach (Blue 2/Silver)

Coach Bethany continues her second year with the Makos.  She hails from Franklin, Wisconsin where she swam at the club and high school level.  She most recently competed at the colegiate level with Division III Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.  Coach Lefeber was a four year varsity letter winner and focused on distance free and butterfly.  While earning her degree, she also coached the developmental squad for a local USA club in Terre Haute, IN.  After having earned her degree in Biomechanical Engeering, she is currently an Engineering Graduate student at nearby Clemson University.  Coach Bethany hopes to instill a lifelong love of the sport of swimming!  This season she will serve in a temporary coach capacity as she focuses on her graduate studies at Clemson Universtiy.  We look forward to having her on the deck as much as possible.

Sarah Loew Assistant Coach Strength & Conditioning

Coach Loew is in her second season with the Makos.  She has served as our Strength and Conditioning coach and will be helping with our Bronze and Developmental swim groups this year. She will be working with our Gold and Platinum groups during their Dryland time. She has a long history of swimming for her local Recreation and High School teams. In the past, she has been the S & C coach for her old Recreation team. She is currently a personal fitness trainer and she lives in Williamston with her daughter Morgan.

Franklin Little Assistant Coach (Blue 2/Silver)

Coach Hunt begins his first Fall season with the Makos as a coach.  He got his first taste of coaching in the summer of 2019.  Hunt gained swimming experience as an athlete with Makos for 6 seasons.  During that time he was a YMCA Regional Qualifier and captain of the TL Hanna High School Swim Team.  He currently swims as a member of the Clemson University Club Team and is a sophomore mechanical engineering student.  He is very excited to be able to give back to his old team and teach a new generation of swimmers.

Courtney Couch Assistant Coach (Blue 1/2)

Coach Courtney has coached with the Makos for three years.  She has a strong competitive swim background and loves sharing her knowledge with beginning swimmers.  Courtney even spent some time living in England.  She is always a welcome spirit on the deck and greets her swimmers with a smile every day.  We are blessed to have her working with our Blue Group.

Hannah Morgan Assistant Coach (Admin)

Coach Hannah begins her fifth year with the Makos.  She grew up swimming in the age group program in the Anderson Area for Anderson Swim Club. She has been instrumental in building the developmental program over the last few years.  She is currently the coach of our Blue 1 swim group.  Hannah also serves as the assistant aquatics director and manages much of the business operations of the team.  Questions about website access, membership, team apparel and billing should be directed to her.  Hannah enjoys spending time with her two boys, Blaze and Caleb.
