EOST president,Steve Hecht, shared this passage with me.  As both a parent and a coach, I can definitely relate to this!  There have been times when my children forgot their goggles, lost their expensive swim suits, ripped yet another cap, or left sandals at warm-ups only to find they're gone when we return for them.  It can be so frustrating.  However, I think you'll agree as you read below.  There's more to swim team than practice and meets!"   ~Coach Laura

One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money and spend so much time running around for your child to swim?" Well I have a confession to make, "I don't pay for my child to swim.....or the suits, goggles, towels, sandals, countless swim caps.  However, if I am not paying for my child to swim, what am I paying for?"

  • I pay for those moments when my child becomes so tired he/she feels like quitting but doesn't.
  • I pay for the opportunity that my child will have to make life-long friendships.
  • I pay for the chance that my child may have amazing instructors that will teach him/her that competitive swimming isn't just about movement, but also about life.
  • I pay for my child to learn to be disciplined.
  • I pay for my child to learn to take care of his/her body.
  • I pay for my child to learn to work with others and to be a proud , supportive, kind and respectful team member.
  • I pay for my child to learn to deal with disappointment, when he/she doesn't get the time he/she had hoped for, false starts, or was just barely out touched at the finish by another swimmer, but still gets up and is determined to do his/her BEST next time.
  •  I pay for my child to learn to make and accomplish goals.
  • I pay for my child to learn that it takes hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight.
  • I pay so that my child can be in the pool instead of running the streets.

I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for swim; I pay for the opportunities that swim provides my child to develop attributes that will serve him/her well throughout his/her life and give him/her the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen for many years, I think it is a great investment!
