McWhorter, Palmer Lead Riptides at Summer Champs!

McWhorter Leads Riptides, Grand Strand at SC Swimming Championships
The 2015 South Carolina Swimming State Championships were hosted July 23-26 at the University of SC in Columbia.  Over 600 athletes from the Palmetto State attended the four-day event.  The locally-based Myrtle Beach Riptides swim team sent ten athletes to compete.

For the Riptides, 12-year old Peyton McWhorter led the Riptides in every category including personal best times, team records and scoring swims.  Additionally, McWhorter scored more individual points than any swimmer from the Grand Strand.

McWhorter achieved 7 new team records in the 200-, 400- and 1500-meter freestyles and 50- and 100-meter butterfly and backstroke events.  McWhorter’s best finish was 3rd place in the 50-meter backstroke.

Dan Henington raced to six personal best times and three new team records in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly and 100-meter backstroke.  Henington placed in the 50- and 100-meter backstrokes and 50-meter butterfly.

Eddie Bateson added two new team records in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter breaststroke.  Bateson also earned best times in the 200-meter free and 200-meter Individual Medley (IM).  Bateson placed in the 100-breastroke and 200-IM.

Ian Morgan swam to three personal best times and a new team record in the 200-meter butterfly.

Chad Bateson, Hurley Cribb, Hannah McDonough and Chase Teasley each swam to multiple best times.  Joe Guthinger competed in his first long-course State Championship and Danielle Flaherty rounded out the squad to Columbia.

Said head coach James Smith, “The swims by our younger swimmers were outstanding.  They really stepped up and led with the most personal, best times and team records.  McWhorter and Henington were on their game for the meet.

“As a small team, we are looking to put things into perspective.  Riptides scored an average of nearly 7 points per swimmer entered in the meet and averaged greater than 6 events per swimmer, which are the highest from the Grand Strand and rank among the best teams in the State.”
