The Riptides sent seven members to compete at the 2008 Augusta Fall Invite. Garrett Blais, 15-18, competing in his first meet as a member of the Riptides, demonstrated tremendous improvement from the recent high school swim season. The MPSC Grand Prix meet was the largest meet for the Riptides. We sent 17 swimmers to compete, many for the first time. The meet went well and Coach Justin did a great job of handling all the swimmers (despite being a wee-bit late to the pool!). Congratulations to Megan Kingsley for being ranked #1 in the Nation for 2007-08! Megan, was the fastest swimmer in the USA in the 11-year old 200 yard butterfly and 400 yard IM. Megan placed 2nd in the 100 yd fly and 1000 free, 3rd in the 500 free, 4th in the 100 yd fly and 200 free, and 5th in the 100 IM and 1,650 free. Carey Hilliard’s Invite was a great event for our first official meet as the Myrtle Beach Riptides. Lauren Campbell and Megan Kingsley each left the meet with the highpoint award for their respective age-groups. There was a nearly 60% improvement in personal times from the meet. Leading the charge were Chad Bateson and Megan Prouty, who went 100% improvement. Chad even led the team with the single largest improvement by 20 seconds in the 200 free. Congratulations to Phil Mustert for earning his second USA-S Scholastic All-American honor. Phil is the only swimmer from the Grand Strand to achieve this recognition. To be eligible for USA-S SAA, a swimmer must have achieved a minimum time standard and achieved a minimum 3.5 GPA for the past school year. With this recognition, Riptide swimmers are excelling in the pool and in school!

Congratulations to Phil Mustert for repeating as State Champion in the boy’s 200 IM with a time of 1:57.4 at the 2008 SC High School 3A State Championships. Phil also placed 2nd in the 500 free with a time of 4:40.0. Lauren Campbell placed 3rd in the girl’s 100 butterfly at 1:00.4 and 4th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.0 at her first 3A HS State Championship.
