E-mail Blast #3 - Monday, October 19
Thank you everyone for attending the first ever West Coast Open Water Championship hosted by the Sandpipers of Nevada and Lake Las Vegas! Your athletes did a remarkable job racing and following our Safety Procedures. An additional shout out is more than necessary for our officials, lifeguards, and volunteers for running a smooth, safe event.

Result files are attached. Please note, the final order of finish was triple verified for each race. Particularly on close races, our app timing system did get a little wonky. We adjusted the final places with Race Admin, but the results do list a faster time for a lower placed finisher in a couple instances. I apologize for the hiccup. Files and updates are also posted on the Event Page.

I did not receive entry fees from several teams. The online payment form is still active. If you have already mailed it, or will be mailing a check, please let me know so I don't continue to email you. Checks made payable to Sandpipers of Nevada.

Missing Payments:
  • SHRK-CA (only short for Kai Griley - $50)
  • CAT-OR
  • LIE-MR
  • Unattached Florida (Gravley & Smith)
  • Unattached Arizona (E. Jones, K. Jones)
  • Unattached-California (S. Wagoner)
Thanks again for coming out, it was a pleasure hosting you all. We plan to host more events in 2021 and would love to bring you all back to Fabulous Las Vegas to swim Open Water
E-mail Blast #2 - Sunday, October 11

Welcome to the inaugural  West Coast Open Water Championships!

This email includes important information for you and your athletes, please read through it thoroughly. Keep in mind, like all OW events, the course, race times, etc, are subject to change. The latest information will be emailed and posted to the  Event Page on our team website. The page will be updated regularly.
Use the hashtag #WCOpenWater and #LakeLV on your social media posts. Follow @sandpipersofnv for live updates.
  • Schedule of events (subject to change)
  • Final entry list for each race (double check your team's to confirm accuracy!)
  • Maps of directions to the course, race courses, and the infrastructure set up
  • Updated Meet Form
Technical Meeting
All athletes and coaches are  required to attend the technical meetings on Friday, October 16 at 7:00pm via Zoom. Meeting times and Zoom codes are included in the Race Day Schedule attachment. Recordings will also be posted to the  Event Page.
Check-in Procedure
The athlete check-in procedure will be outlined during the technical meeting on Friday. Check-in will take place inside the building and will feed athletes out to the athlete area where they will keep their bags, be able to hang out, and enter the race course. Check-in will have two stations (split into several sub-stations to avoid lines):
  1. Positive check-in, temperature check, waiver collection (visiting teams), and receive athlete number card.
  2. Nail check, suit check, numbering (with markers), and receive a disposable mask.
  3. Free to go to the athlete area and warm up in the lake.
  4. Coaches will have a separate check-in to check Deck Pass, collect waivers, and collect entry fees
Entry Fee Online Payment Option
Entry fees can be paid online. Follow this link to online payment form:  https://form.jotform.com/202826045618051. If you have unattached athletes, you can pay for them in the same transaction as your attached athletes.
You may still pay by cash/check. Please bring it directly to me or Race Admin. Checks made payable to Sandpipers of Nevada.
Spectators & Social Distancing
It is imperative that everyone in attendance wears masks and spreads out as much as possible. Lake Las Vegas & the City of Henderson mandated we have 1 spectator/athlete in each race to minimize the number of people at the course at one time. Please respect these rules!
There are two areas that are designated for spectators, both are labeled on the map. I recommend spectators bring chairs or tents to set up in those areas. The speed limit on the dam is 10mph! Bathrooms will be located outside the fence on the east side of the parking lot. Spectators will NOT be allowed inside the fence into the athlete area. Again, please stay 6ft apart from other families in these areas.
COVID Waiver
All athletes and coaches MUST fill out the Sandpiper COVID waiver. It is included in the meet form. If you participated in the September races, please fill out a new waiver.
Nail Check
We will have nail clippers available for athletes to use, but we encourage all participants to cut their nails before the race day.
Water Temperature
We are anticipating the water temperature to be in the low 70s. If the water temperature dips below 68, we will either delay the race start until the water warms or allow the option for wetsuits per USA Swimming rule 701.1.2. Again, I do not anticipate the water temperature becoming cold enough to necessitate wetsuits.
The forecasted air temperatures are low 60s in the mornings into the low 90s in the afternoons with light winds.
Feed Dock
The feed station location for the 7.5K & 10K races will be finalized on Friday. It will either be on the far dock by the dam (as listed on the map), or attached to the finish dock. Feed sticks will not be provided.
Final results from each race will more than likely not be official before check-in opens for the next race. Athletes and spectators are to clear out of the race course as soon as their race is over. Results will be posted to the Event Page and Meet Mobile (search: West Coast OW).
Warm Up and Course Availability
The race course will be available from 3-6pm Friday evening. Lifeguards will be present but  wearing swim buoys is encouraged. Kayaks & paddle boards will be available for coaches to  use. Unaccompanied athletes must check-in with the Safety Monitor.
The water north of the athlete area will be open for warm up and warm down on race day.
Local Pool Availability
We were not able to reserve pool space for visiting teams due to COVID. However, you are welcome to contact the area facilities to reserve lane space. Local pools currently available for lane rental (and their distance from Lake Las Vegas):
  • Heritage Park Aquatic Complex (7.6 miles)
  • Henderson Multi. Gen. Pool (13.6 miles)
  • Desert Breeze Aquatic Center (29.9 miles)
  • Aquatic Springs (27.3 miles)
  • Municipal Pool (19.1 miles)
We are excited to host you all. Please contact me with any questions.
E-mail Blast #1 - Wednesday, September 16
Good Afternoon Coaches & LSC Chairs,

The West Coast Open Water Championship is officially sanctioned AND open to ALL USA Swimming registered members! With USA Swimming's perfectly timed October sanction update yesterday, all athletes from USA Swimming are welcome to participate, not just the adjacent LSC's or Western States, as previously published.
I have attached the Race Information Packet, Event Entry files, and hotel info. All of this information, and more, is available on the Event Landing Page on the Sandpiper Team Website. We will be using that page to upload parking maps, race information, timelines, results, etc. Please direct your families to this page.
LSC Leaders: Please pass this information along to your clubs and coaches! We had several teams reach out that they had not received information about the September event until the deadline had passed.
A few important items (please read thoroughly):
  • We are limited to no more than 50 athletes in a race, per local restrictions. Entries will be accepted first come, first serve beginning Friday, September 18 at 9:00am PST via Online Meet Entry. All entries received will be notified of their status for the race. THIS EVENT WILL FILL UP FAST! The entry deadline is Thursday, October 8 at 11:59pm PST for events that do not reach the 50 athlete cap.
    • In order to have the proper event eligibility, we created separate OME pages for each race/division. Please double check that you are entering the intended race when completing the OME.
  • TeamManager Event Files are attached for eligibility report purposes only:
    • One file is to check eligibility through the 800m/1000y events
    • One file is to check eligibility through the 1500m/1650y events
    • If using these files on TeamUnify, you will need to edit the file and change the distances of each race to the corresponding eligibility event distance (1500 or 800)
  • Entry fees can be mailed in advance or paid via check/cash on race day. Payment through OME is not available.
  • Once entries are finalized, we will publish official race day schedules with check-in times, start lists, meetings, and race start times. The race day schedules in the Race Information file are extremely tentative!
  • Specific procedures about check-in, warm up, technical meetings, and the actual races will be published the week of the event.
  • All coaches and athletes must have a COVID Waiver on file to be turned in at check-in. We encourage you all to sign ahead of time, but we will have blank copies at race check-in.
    • If you participated in the September event, we ask that you fill out another waiver for our records.
  • Please have your families read the Safety Sections of the meet form. Families must plan to be in & out for their races only so we can cycle the next group into the venue with minimal overlap.  Lake Las Vegas mandated families have 1 spectator/swimmer at each race. Please abide by these rules, it is for the safety of everyone in attendance. Thank you in advance!
  • We are still determining which section of Lake Las Vegas we will be holding the races in. You will see in the attached maps that we have an Option A (southern section), or an Option B (northern section). We will publish which location we will be competing in as soon as it is final. More detailed course information will follow when that decision is made.
  • Mike Murphy ( [email protected]) will be our Meet Ref. Please contact him with any questions about officiating the races or the meet format itself.
  • We highly recommend staying at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas with your families and taking advantage of our group rate. The hotel overlooks the southern part of Lake Las Vegas and is connected to the beautiful shopping and restaurant portion of the canal. Our group rate expires Friday, October 2.
The Sandpipers and Lake Las Vegas are very excited to host you all. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
