E-MAIL #4 (Wrap Up) - Sunday, September 19
On behalf of the Sandpipers of Nevada and Lake Las Vegas, thank you for attending the  2021 Western Zone Open Water Championships! It was a pleasure hosting nearly 300 athletes from 12 of the 16 Western Zone LSCs.
I have a few items to bring to your attention following yesterday's races:
I have attached two sets of results and the TeamManager results file. One set of results is the PDF of all of yesterday's races, undoctored. The second file has the 5K results with all of the ineligible Junior National athletes (18 or older in 2022) scored as exhibition. More on Junior National qualifying below.  They are also posted to our Event Landing Page.
Outstanding Entry Fees
There are several clubs/individuals that did not submit their entry fees yesterday. I will follow up in a separate email to those people in a couple of days. I know there are some checks in the mail as well. Please take care of these entry fees in a timely manner, thank you.
We will be mailing awards to those that we weren't able to track you down yesterday. I will be in touch for a mailing address to send those out. The top 8 finishers in each event received a medal.
Junior National Qualifying
The Men's & Women's 5K races served as a qualifier for the  2022 Open Water Junior National races in the Spring. With both the WZ race and the 2022 Jr. National race using FINA age birthdays for all athletes, determining who was eligible for this can be confusing.
In order to be eligible to qualify for the 2022 Junior National 5K race, an athlete must be 15 or younger as of  12/31/2022. Therefore, if you look at our results where athletes' ages are as of 12/31/2021, anyone listed as 14 or younger will be eligible for the 2022 Jr. Nat. 5K.
In order to be eligible to qualify for the 2022 Junior National 7.5K race, an athlete must be 16 or 17 as of  12/31/2022. Therefore, if you look at our results where athletes' ages are as of 12/31/2021, anyone listed as 15 or 16 will be eligible for the 2022 Jr. Nat. 7.5K.
USA Swimming hasn't published the pool qualifying times for the 2022 Open Water Nationals or Junior Nationals yet. When those times are released, the qualifying swimmers from the Zone Meets will be finalized. I will email out the Meet From and qualifying times to each LSC's OW Coordinator when they are made available.
A huge shout out is needed for our awesome crew of officials and lifeguards. They spent 5+ hours out on the water yesterday in near 100° temperatures. Thank you for helping us out and ensuring all of the athletes had safe and fair opportunities to race.
Las Vegas Open Water Champions Cup
We hope you all are able to come back to Lake Las Vegas October 8-10 for the inaugural  Las Vegas Open Water Champions Cup! This race series offers a variety of races and distances for athletes of multiple ability levels and ages. The Elite 10K race will serve as the selection race for the USA 2021-22 Open Water National Team. Entries are due via OME Wednesday, September 29. More information can be found on the Event Landing Page:  https://www.teamunify.com/team/scsccsnv/page/system/res/120309.
Wishing you all the best in your 2021-22 seasons,
Coach Michael Kinross

Technical Meetings
All athletes and coaches are required to attend the technical meetings on Friday, September 17 at 7:30pm PST on Zoom. Meeting times and Zoom codes are included in the Race Day Schedule attachment and shared below. Recordings will also be posted to the Event Page.
Masks Requirement
All athletes, coaches, officials, and event workers will be required to wear masks when inside the fenced area where we have our race headquarters. This is required regardless of your vaccination status. Athletes will be given a disposable mask at check-in to wear prior to the race. They will throw that mask away as they enter the water for their races. Athletes will then be given a new mask and a bottle of water upon finishing the race.
Race Schedule Change
Due to a large number of entries, we opted to separate the Boy's and Girl's 2.5K races entirely vs running them 5 minutes apart. The attached Race Day Schedule reflects these changes.
Check-in Procedure
The athlete check-in procedure will be outlined during the technical meetings on Friday. Check-in will take place inside the building and will feed athletes out to the athlete area where they will keep their bags, be able to hang out, and enter the race course. Check-in will have two stations (split into several sub-stations to avoid lines):
  1. Positive check-in, wellness check, waiver collection (visiting teams), money collection (visiting teams), and receive athlete competitor card
  2. Nail check, suit check, numbering (with markers), and receive a disposable mask
    • We will have nail clippers available for athletes to use, but we encourage all participants to cut their nails before the race day.
  3. Free to go to athlete area and use warm up course
  4. Athletes are strongly encouraged to bring a chair for their belongings and somewhere to sit in the shaded athlete area
  5. Coaches will have a separate check-in to check Deck Pass and collect waivers
Entry Fees
If your team is NOT sending a check ahead of time, please bring your payment to race day. Checks made payable to Sandpipers of Nevada.

This year, all spectators will need to watch the races from the northeast side of the race course by the dam. You will need to drive there from the venue. Directions are outlined in the Venue Map attachment. Parents and spectators will NOT be allowed inside the fenced area.
When accessing the spectator viewing area, drive no faster than 10 MPH! The entire area is an active home development site and we need to be mindful of kicking up dust. Signs will be posted about where specifically to park and sit to watch the race. We recommend bringing chairs to sit in. The area on the helipad and dock on the east side of the lake are off limits to us. Please respect our signage.

Final results from each race will more than likely not be official before check-in opens for the next race. Athletes and spectators are to clear out of the race course as soon as their race is over. Results will be posted to the Event Page and Meet Mobile (search: Western Zone Open Water).

Warm-up and Course Availability
The race course will be available from 4-6:30pm Friday evening. Safety personnel will be on the course, but coaches are encouraged to kayak or paddle board with their athletes. Swim safety buoys are not required, but strongly recommended.

The lake area south of the athlete area will be open for warm up during check-in and up until the pre-racing briefing (15 minutes before race start time).

We are excited to host you all Saturday! Please contact me with any questions,

Coach Michael Kinross
E-MAIL #1 - Sunday, August 8
Hello Western Zone Leaders, Coaches, and Open Water Enthusiasts!
On behalf of the Sandpipers of Nevada, Lake Las Vegas, the City of Henderson, and the Western Zone, we are thrilled to formally invite you all to the 2021 Western Zone Open Water Championships. The race is officially sanctioned and open for entries. Please thoroughly read through all of the information below.
I have included a number of important files and links in this email. All of this information, and more, is available on the Event Landing Page on the Sandpiper Team Website. We will be using that page to upload the most up to date information.
  • Attachments:
    • Race Information packet (includes venue maps & COVID waiver)
    • TM Event Entry File
    • Entry instructions (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • The entry deadline is Wednesday, September 8
  • At this time, we do not have an online payment option. All payments must be mailed to the address in the meet form or bring the payment to race check-in.
  • Only athlete members of Western Zone LSCs may enter.
  • Paul Szuszkiewicz ([email protected]) will be our Meet Ref. Please contact him with any questions about officiating or the race itself.
  • The 13 & Older 5K race will serve as a qualifier for the 2022 Open Water Junior National races.
  • At this time, we are not limited in the number of athletes we can have in each race. If the decision is made that we need to limit numbers, we will attempt to split races into heats accordingly. If we are forced to have hard maximum entry numbers, priority will go in order of date/time entries are received. Declined entries will receive a full refund.
  • Once entries are finalized, we will publish official race day schedules with check-in times & procedures, meetings, race start times, etc.
  • The race course will be open Friday, September 17 for practice time. Specific times will be announced the week of the race. You can plan for a 2-3 hour window in the late afternoon/early evening.
  • All coaches and athletes must have a COVID Waiver on file to be turned in at check-in. You may also send them digitally ahead of time to the race director, Michael Kinross.
    • If an individual has previously competed in a Sandpiper hosted event since September 2020, they do not need to turn in a waiver.
Finally, if you have not already booked your hotels, we strongly recommend taking advantage of the hotel blocks we set up for our visitors. There are only two hotels on property at Lake Las Vegas and we have great rates at both of those hotels with NO RESORT FEE. The hotel information is available on the Event Landing Page. I am working on an extension of the cut off date for reservations, but don't wait to book!
We are looking forward to hosting you all next month. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Coach Michael Kinross
