Tim Teeter Director of Swim Team /Head Coach

Tim will begin his four season as the Director and Head Coach of Set Swim Team. He has spent nearly 20 years as a coach and has worked with athletes of all levels. During his first two years at SET his athletes broke over 120 club records and the club tripled in number of members.

Prior to coming to Set Swim Team, Tim served as the head coach for Ames Cyclone Aquatics Club where he lead ACAC to its first ever ISI State Championship. During his time at ACAC he developed one of the premier swim clubs in the upper Midwest.  

Tim’s coaching career has included coaching swim clubs in Northern California, high school in Iowa, and colleges in both Northern California and Iowa. His early career took him to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. During his time at UOP Teeter coached 12 NCAA All-Americans, who earned 31 All-American awards. He has coached international athletes that have won numerous national titles in their home countries. One of Tim’s athletes, Ziada Jardine, made the semifinals at the 2004 FINA World Short Course Championships.

As an athlete, Tim swam for Iowa State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies. He was a four year letterwinner for the Cyclones, earned Academic All-Big Eight honors as a swimmer and was a member of the Big 8 Champion Team in 1995. After Iowa State, Teeter continued his education at Creighton University School of Law. At Creighton Tim received his J.D.

Tim also serves as the Head Coach of the El Toro High School Swim Team. He is married to Jessica and they have two children, Nyte and Daley.

JC Guzman Associate Head Coach

JC comes to SET Swim Team from JCA Swim Team in Los Angeles.  JC has been involved in swimming for many years.  He was a high school All-American and a Junior National qualifier.  He spent a few years in the U.S. Army.

JC currently is training for triathlons with the goal of becoming an ironman finisher.  He has a wide variety of experiences as a coach.  Including working for a learn to swim program all the way to training sectional level qualifiers.  Additionally, he has also worked with deaf athletes and is currently learning sign language.  

JC primarily works with Bronze 2 and Silver 2, but helps with all groups when necessary.  His experience and excitement are very positive attributes that JC brings to the SET Swim Team.

Barrett Tester Assistant Coach -13 & over Pink

Using swimming as a prime motivator and connector, Barrett has parlayed his love of water sports into an exciting aquatic career spanning several
decades. From being an experienced ocean lifeguard (California State Parks, Los Angeles County Fire Dept.), to seasoned marketing executive
(Quiksilver), to well traveled event producer (Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle) and contest director (International Surfing Association). Now
returning to coaching, Barrett looks forward to helping motivated athletes become their best.

Barrett’s prior coaching experience includes working with swimmers at all levels from beginner to Olympians. Past coaching positions include: Sprint
Coach U.C. Davis Men’s Swimming, Head Swim Coach Loyola H.S., Head Swim Coach Beverly Hills H.S., Masters Swimming Coach Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ), Age-Group Coach Team Santa Monica (TSM) and Graduate Assistant Coach U.C.L.A. Men’s Swimming.

As an accomplished swimmer, Barrett was a four-year Letterman at U.C.L.A. Men’s Swimming, Jr. National qualifier, earned several National Age-Group rankings and Junior Olympic championships. As an avid ocean sports competitor, Barrett won five (5) United States Lifesaving National Championships, was a member of United States teams to New Zealand and Australia and a former World Bodysurfing Champion (1993).

Barrett earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from U.C.L.A. He is married to Julia and has two children, daughter Kaelin and son Cruz (who is a member of SET age-group team).

Theresa Sorenson Assistant Coach -13 & over Black

Coach T Sorenson joined the SET coaching staff in September 2018. She began coaching swimming in 1989 and has coached with the Mission Viejo Nadadores, Burnsville, and South Metro Storm swim clubs and high school girls at Mission Viejo (CA) and Prior Lake (MN) high schools. She has coached swimmers from novice to national qualifiers and masters swimmers. Under her coaching, swimmers have earned USAS state, zone, and national age group records and high school team records and conference, section, and state championship swims. Many swimmers she has coached have also competed at the collegiate level.

As a coach for SET, Coach T is most excited about helping athletes work together as a team and understanding the relationship between consistently working smart and hard and success. Creating and maintaining a positive and supportive team culture is critical to everything else we do as a team. Coach T also served as a high school communications teacher, K-12 principal, and then district superintendent in Minnesota. She was a member of the University of St. Thomas licensure review panel, a panel that evaluates candidates for superintendent licensure in the state of Minnesota. In March 2012 she retired from the superintendency and focused her career in coaching. Coach T received several honors while working in public schools including the following:

·Minnesota Teacher of the Year nominee, 2005
·Advisor of the Year, 2003
·Led production of the first all-digital high school yearbook in Minnesota, 2003

Earlier in her career, Coach T served as a Marketing Manager (1996-1998) and a Marketing Coordinator (1995-1996) for Medtronic, a multi-national medical device company. She also worked as the Assistant Editor for the American Phytopathological Society (1989-1990) until taking time off to stay at home with her first child. Coach T earned her B.S. from Iowa State University, with a double major in English and speech communication with an emphasis in science. She earned her M.A.T. in education and Ed.D. in leadership, policy, and administration from the University of St. Thomas. As part of her academic and swimming pursuits, she has shared her knowledge through several publications and presentations including:

Coach T began swimming in high school and improved quickly; competing at the national level and
earning high school All-American honors her senior year. She earned all-conference recognition multiple
times while swimming at Iowa State University. Coach T has been a masters swimmer, but is currently
enjoying the life of a lap swimmer while her youngest son is finishing high school. She earned several
accolades in her swimming career including:

·U.S. Masters Swimming National Top 10, free (2009-2012), back (2011), breast (2011), individual
medley (2009-2011), fly (2012)

Coach T still holds her high school team and pool records in the 100 and 200 free. They have been unbroken for more than 30 years.

Matthew Sorenson Assistant Coach - PreCompetitive - Pink

Matt is coaching his first year with SET. Matt was born in Minnesota and lived there until he moved to Southern California in 2012. competitively for 12 years. In high school, he swam and  played water polo for Mission Viejo High School. He earned his swimming varsity letter all four years, and    his senior year was voted varsity MVP. Matt is currently swimming  in the National Group with SET.

Matt is excited to start coaching his first competitive swimming group. His prior coaching experience includes teaching swim lessons under Coach JC with SET’s learn to swim program. He is looking forward to introducing new athletes to the world of competitive swimming.
