Doug Ellery - Coach and Program Director

Doug Ellery - Head Coach and Program Director
Coach Doug comes to us from Canada, where he has evolved from a top Canadian High Performance athlete to an award-winning coach. He brings deep knowledge of technique, along with great passion for the sport of Olympic Sprint Canoe/Kayak. He served as Warcanoe Coach and Para-Canoe Coach at Balmy Beach Club Canoe, Head Coach at North Bay Canoe Club, Head Coach at Pickering Rouge Canoe Club, Masters Head Coach at Maskwa Aquatic Club and most recently Youth Racing Coach and Development Coach at Mississauga Canoe Club, the winningest club in Canada! In 2013 and again in 2018, Coach Doug received the Canoe Kayak Canada National Champion Coach Awards.

Chris Barlow - Coach, Founder and Board Member

Chris Barlow - Coach, Founder and SDCKT Board Member
Chris is a USA Canoe Kayak Olympian who competed in the K4 1000m in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. Chris is certified as an ICF Level 3 Sprint Coach as well as a USA Canoe/Kayak Level 3 High Performance Coach.  He founded San Diego Canoe Kayak Team (SDCKT) in 1997 as a way to give back to the sport he loves. He found his true passion in coaching young paddlers and athletes from beginners to USA National Teams. Chris has been Team Leader for the USA National Team at Junior & Senior World Championships, Pan Am Games and helped coach athletes to multiple USA National Youth Olympic & Olympic Teams. He was awarded USA Coach of the Year in 2010 & 2014 and was awarded the 2018 Havens Leadership Award, and the 2019 Athletes in Excellence Award from the Foundation for Global Sports Development. This award recognizes high-performance athletes who have also dedicated themselves to community service and mentorship.

Joe Harper - Coach, Board Member

Coach Joseph - Coach and SDCKT Board Member
Coach Joseph is a USA Canoe Kayak Olympian, competing in the C1 1000m at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been involved in the sport of sprint canoe racing for over 40 years as a national team athlete or a canoe coach. Coach Joseph is certified as an International Canoe Federation Level 1 Coach and has coached athletes to multiple national championships, national teams, international regattas and medal winning performances. His passion for womens canoe continues to drive the sport here in the USA!

Coach JC - SDCKT Kayak Polo Coach
Coach JC started his paddling career as a sprint kayaker in 1990. He was member of the Canadian Junior National team from 97 to 99 and the Senior National team from 2002 to 2004; he participated in 7 Sprint World Cups and 6 Sprint World Championships culminating in some top 9 results in the World.

In 2005, he changed his focus from Sprint kayaking to canoe polo as an athlete and a coach at the Pointe-Claire Canoe Club in Montreal.  Over the following 12 years, he built from the ground up the local canoe-polo team and made it one of the top competing teams in the country with many of his athletes making the Canadian National Team.

He expanded his volunteering roles within the CKC organization as the U21M National Team Coach and High-Performance Director from 2010 to 2012 and took the role of CKC-Polo Chairman from 2012 to 2017. Internationally, he got his ICF Canoe-Polo Referee certification in 2011 and reached Level B within a few years. He was game referee during the 2014 Canoe-Polo World Championships in France and 2016 in Italy.

In 2017 he made the big move to San Diego with his family where he is now running the monthly canoe polo practice at SDCKT.
