John McGlynn Head Coach / Owner

John has been involved with youth sports in both the Escondido and Valley Center areas since moving to California in 1990.  In swimming, he has served a variety of roles:  parent, board member, official, coach, and LSC representatiive with clubs such as Escondido Swim Club (ESC) and Palomar Family YMCA (PALY).  He has also served as head coach for two local high schools:  Valley Center (CIF champs in 2004) and Escondido Charter.  In 2013, he formed Renegade Aquatics and has served as the head coach of this rapidly growing program.

Raised in Philadelphia with a passion for all sports, John excelled in soccer both at the club and school level - where his college team (Univ of Scranton) competed in four D3 Final Fours.  He was exposed to great coaches when his children started swimming (Stu Kahn, Bill Catania in particular) and put all of his energy into his adopted sport.  John has served as an assistant coach on numerous San Diego All-Star and Zones teams and was selected by his peers as SI Age Group Coach of the Year in 2014.

The primary goal that John has for the Renegade program is to help children recognize their potential (in and out of the water) and help them fulfill that potential.  We take great pride in our athletes, their support of each other, their service to their community, and their performance in the pool.

Ginger Johnson Assistant Coach

Ginger Johnson started swimming on a summer swim team at the age of 4 in Walnut Creek, CA. She continued to swim competitively as well as participate in many other sports while moving around the country with her Navy family.  She was a 4 year Varsity swimmer at Jamestown High School, Jamestown, NY, holding school records in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 free (which have all now been shattered) and also the first female from her high school to qualify for and compete at the New York State swim meet. She swam Division I at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA), concentrating on middle distance freestyle events (200, 500, 1000).

Ginger has over 10 years of swim instructor experience, and previously coached the boys and girls teams at Hampton High School, VA and was the head coach of the JCC WAHOOS swim team in Worcester, MA.  She relocated to Escondido in 1996 and has spent countless hours on various pool decks as a spectator/parent/volunteer before returning as a coach in 2014.  In 2016 she served as the JV coach for San Pasqual High School.  She is the mother of three swimmers, two of them currently Renegade team members, and she continues to swim and run in her free time. Her swimming (and life) philosophy is: "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can."
