World Class Nordic Ski Programs At Your Doorstep

Bustling kids’ & adults’ ski programs meet world-class coaching at

Highlands Trailblazers Ski Club just south of Collingwood

Think cross-country skiing is about wooden skis, bamboo poles and wet woollens? Think again. Just south of Collingwood is where world-class athletes get their start.

The FUNdamentals of athletic development

Every wintry Saturday and Sunday, dozens of children ages 4 to 9 pour out of the Jackrabbits room at Highlands Nordic, 15 minutes south of Collingwood, just west of Duntroon. They are eager to ski and play in the weekly 2-hour Jackrabbit ski program specifically designed for the FUNdamentals stage of athletic development.

As children move up through the Jackrabbits levels, they progress from the very basics of classic Nordic skiing through to the various techniques of skate skiing. Throughout their practice, the key word is FUN, as skills sessions are interspersed with games (on skis) and longer ‘free ski’ forays. Seasonal highlights include the ‘Winter Olympics’ and a bonfire complete with hot dogs and hot chocolate.

Building strong, confident young people

The FUNdamentals set an important foundation for young children. “Nordic skiing gives young people confidence, skills and fitness,” observes Gord Salt, a national-level competition coach and lead coach with the Trailblazers. “It’s amazing how it helps with their long-term development. It really sets them up for success in life.”

The levels after Jackrabbits, for those who wish to progress, are Track Attack, Junior Competition and Competition, Winter Adventure (for teens who don’t wish to compete) and a full Biathlon program (skiing and target shooting). Highlands Trailblazers coaches are all seasoned, certified Nordic skiing coaches, so it’s no wonder that many of the club’s athletes compete at the provincial level.

Jackrabbits & Highland Trailblazers Info Session

To find out more about the Jackrabbits program for children ages 4 to 9, youth programs and the Masters program for adults, come meet the Trailblazers coaches at an info session Saturday, November 16th from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Highlands Nordic. Jackrabbits program runs for 9 weeks starting January 4th and costs $185 + tax. For information about other youth or adult programs, drop by Highlands Nordic or visit HighlandTrailblazers.ca.

Fun & skills for adults

Many Jackrabbit parents use that time to ski or snowshoe the 30+ kilometers of pristine trails winding their way up onto the Niagara Escarpment. But many adults come to Highlands Nordic without children in tow, to rent ski or snowshoe packages for self-guided exploration or to participate in one of many coaching and ski/snowshoe discovery sessions going on every weekend from December through March.
