(Santa Maria, CA) – Haley Calderon, long-time Santa Maria Swim Club athlete and distinguished alumni is up to big things this summer! Haley is currently a student at the University of California at Berkeley. She swam in the SMSC Senior group during her high school years. Haley was offered a summer research position in Physics this summer. So what’s the big deal? Her hard work has led to her being offered a position to work on Project Alpha at CERN – the large hadron collider in Switzerland. Haley says, “I’ll...

(Arroyo Grande, CA) - Both local high school league meets took place at Arroyo Grande High School this week. SMSC had swimmers competing in both the Mountain and Ocean League Championships for their respective high schools. Not to be left out, several more SMSC athletes represented at the Channel League Championships also. To say that SMSC athletes dominated the results at these meets is an understatement. Your children have taken an unfortunate situation and rose to the occassion anyways. There are literally too many SMSC athletes for me to detail...

SMSC had meets in Clovis and Mission Viejo this past weekend. For many this represented the first real racing opportuntities in over a year. At the Mission Viejo TYR Pro, SMSC was represented by Claire Tuggle and Parker Reynolds. Considering they were some of the few high school aged athletes competing at this meet - often against professionals and college athletes, the meet went fairly well. These two athletes competed more long course mileage on the weekend than they have been able to swim in training for the past 14...

Random Thoughts On Talent As coaches, we hear a lot about why people are successful. I usually hear some form of: “He/she is blessed with talent.” Or some form of that. As if it was just bestowed on some individuals and not others. Perhaps talent is only given to a select few? We’ve seen some of the most untalented 8-under, 10-under, 11 & 12 year olds finally have the light bulb go on and become “talented.” Random Observer: “That Susie is so talented.” Susie’s Coach: [Under breath], “She couldn’t swim...

SMSC Nation! I was just speaking to our Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary about how awesome the kids in this program have been and how supportive our parent group has been. I know we have had stops and starts, alternate pool locations, strict safety protocols and the like. Thank you for continuing to bring your kids here to be developed into National-caliber student-athletes! As we have had to cancel practices at the last minute recently for poor pool chemicals, lighting etc., I wanted to review some "must-have" knowledge. The Coaching Staff...

(Colorado Springs, CO) - SMSC was awarded Bronze Medal status for 2021 by USA Swimming. This is the 2nd year in a row and the 9th time that SMSC has received the award. On an annual basis, the Club Excellence program recognizes USA Swimming's highest-performing clubs in the development of athletes ages 18 years and younger. This recognition does not account for team size, meaning that SMSC often competes against teams that are considerably larger. SMSC finished 110th out of 3500 USA Swimming teams for 2021. While the award itself...

SMSC hosted our annual General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. The meeting took place via ZOOM. Here are the greatest hits of what happened: Welcome and Thank You from Coach Mike Welcome and Thank You from President John Edds Presentation of Proposed Budget for 2020-2021: While the Club has survived the COVID closure and return to swim, we are unable to host swim meets (major income source) or pursue most fundraising (major income source). (Santa Maria, CA) - Parker Reynolds and Blake Simpson were named to the USA Swimming 18-under World 100 List.
