Jeanette Spears - Assistant Coach

I have worked in the aquatic industry in some fashion since 2003. My interest in swimming began when I started to participate in triathlons. The love of that sport launched my coaching career. I worked for an all-women’s triathlon team for four years as a USA Swimming Coach and USA Cycling coach.

In 2007 I began teaching preschool and during the summer working at a summer camp where I was in charge of the swim program. We taught ages 3-12 daily swim skills. I worked there for 6 years until I was offered the opportunity to work as a Park Ranger. As a Ranger, I was the designated Life Guard Instructor responsible for certifying other Rangers. We ran kayaking, snorkeling, and other water programs for the community youth.

In 2015 I moved to Pocatello and worked at Ross Park as an Aquatics Assistant Manager for the summer. In August of 2015, I was hired on at the City of Blackfoot to manage their pool. Unfortunately, three years later that pool was shut down however, I was lucky enough to be offered a job as a Department Specialist with the City of Pocatello at the community recreation center. I am still able to help train lifeguards when needed.

I look forward to getting involved with coaching once again. It is always very exciting to see the children improve and learn new things. My philosophy will always be “have FUN” while learning.

Kathleen Roberts - Interim Coach

Kathleen Roberts serves as Age Group Coach for Portneuf Valley Swim Team.  She has five decades of aquatics experience, including 15 years spent coaching swimmers and a lifetime of teaching swimming to others.  She coached Pocatello’s youth swim team, then known as FAST, from 1989 to 1998. Her inclusive coaching style and enthusiasm for sport helped grow the team from 30 swimmers to its peak of 118 kids.  She returned to aquatics in 2011 as Assistant Coach for Lava Heat Aquatics, using those same skills to help grow this rural team from 1 person to 55 kids. She also served as the Heat’s Swim Lessons Coordinator, creating and running a fantastic Learn-to-Swim program in Lava Hot Springs.  She recruited and trained instructors as well as developed a unique and efficient curriculum to bring lessons to over 1,200 individual kids annually. She has coached swimmers from small to big, both fast and less fast, including collegiate athletes Hannah Ross, Chris DeYoung, Allison McInturf, Melissa Hopko, and Karen Homstad. Under her leadership, FAST won the 1996 Snake River Winter Championships--and in case anyone wonders, yes:  Boise brought a full team that year.

Kathleen comes from an impressive athletic background.  She would be embarrassed to be called “ahead of her time,” but she was a pioneer who helped make it possible for girls to be athletes too.  She ran track in high school (despite her high school not offering that women’s sport) breaking 1:00 in the 440 yards in 1967. Her running abilities led her to the sport of Luge where she competed for the United States Women’s Luge Team for over a decade and represented her sport at the United States Olympic Committee 1976-1978.  A three-time Olympian, she competed in 1968, 1972, and 1976 Winter Games and 1970 and 1974 World Luge Championships.

She cannot stay away from the sport, and despite her 2016 retirement, she returned to assist PVST in 2017 as a part-time age group coach.  She has five grandsons and one granddaughter. She loves working in her yard and sewing, and she alternately follows bull riding, tennis, and cycling on TV.
