AQTX Waterpolo News 2/11

James Smith

Another strong weekend for our 14u boys, Thunder Spring Invite, and high school water polo is (basically) here.

Cowtown Rodeo Re-cap

For the second time in just a few months our 14u boys earned a top three finish at a Cowtown-hosted USA Water Polo tournament. They went 3-1 losing only to eventual champions Southside and finished with a strong 19-6 win over Zilla to place third at the Cowtown Rodeo on Sunday.

With help from our friends at Longhorn and Austin our core players earned the attention of certain parents and coaches who are coming to recognize the AquaTex kids as we increase the number of tournaments we enter (one said AquaTex could likely be the third best 14u squad in Texas).

Jacob continued his constant improvement, working very hard and scoring a difficult shot from the weak side; Riley earned his usual countless steals; Austin was a real presence in front of the goal scoring a beautiful re-direct (our passing was much improved); Luca remains perhaps our biggest shooting threat and an imposing defender; and the long-arm-of-Matthew made itself very apparent with multiple shot blocks, some disruptive hard defense, and several steals.

Another big success as the club makes itself increasingly known throughout Texas. Congratulations to all the athletes, and thank you to the parents, for a very good weekend. See the entire tournament schedule and results here.

Thunder Spring Invite

This is a roster call for anyone 8th grade and under who wants to play at the Thunder Spring Invite on February 29-March 1. Longhorn has asked for AquaTex players since we will not be organizing the trip due to coaches' schedule conflict. Email Coach James if you want to go.

Update your USAWP Account

A reminder that athletes must be currently registered with USA Water Polo to practice with or compete for AquaTex. Take a moment to make sure you're membership is current (Bronze level at a minimum). And update your ID photos. The referees when checking IDs aren't impressed by how cute you were in 4th grade. They want to see a recent photo!

We're very excited to be hosting our first Splashball session on February 22 at 10:00 AM. Thanks to those who have already registered. Share the news with friends, families, neighbors. We'd love a huge turnout! To participate young athletes (5-11) will need to sign up via this USA Water Polo link ($10 per calendar year).

We've had some good turnout at our recent Saturday masters scrimmages. A reminder that we're on the calendar for most Saturdays from 10:00 to noonish. There is not a membership requirement and the drop-in fee is $10. USA Water Polo membership is required.

Parent Meeting

Our February 5 parent meeting got snowed out. We are still on for Wednesday, February 19, at 7:15 PM. It should last no more than 30 minutes and will cover several things like Junior Olympics, team philosophy, goals for the club, fees and logistics, volunteering, events we are hosting, communications, and more. Coach James and Danny Dixon will lead the conversation.

High School Tournaments

We already have teams committed to our high school Spring Opener on March 6-7. More to come including assignments for desk workers and other volunteers. These are extremely important fund-raisers for the water polo club and plans are to direct those funds toward some much needed new equipment. Game clocks and new team caps come to mind.

See you on the deck,
