James E. Smith

Head Waterpolo Coach

USA Water Polo named Coach James the 2015-16 Top Development Coach for its national Olympic Development Program. He has been Head Coach of the Southwest Zone boys’ team since 2015 and has helped send nearly 10 Texan boys to the National Team Selection Camp in California.

He helmed the Round Rock High School girls to four TISCA West Region Championships and was Coach of the Year in 2018. Both the boys and girls teams advanced to the state championship tournament each year he led them. At La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, CA he led the boys’ squad to the most improved record in the San Diego County in 2002. He played at Long Beach Wilson High School and UC San Diego and earned his MBA from Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

Matthew Smiley

Assistant Coach

Coach Matthew joins us after playing at New Trier HS in the Chicago suburbs, and with the University of Arizona men's team. He coaches our 14u team. He works for a consulting firm and lives in Austin.

Kendall Katusak

Seasonal Coach

The Austin College and former AquaTex player will join us in the winter and summer seasons. Named TISCA West Region High School MVP in 2018 she's one of the vanguard of AquaTexans taking her skills to the collegiate varsity ranks. She coaches both youth and high school athletes.

Shannon Berry

Seasonal Coach

Shannon is one of AquaTex's (formerly CenTex) earliest members. In 2019 she finished her first season of varsity water polo at Austin College where she was honored by the school with the Sig Lawson Award, given to those who show great character and work ethic. She coaches youth and high school athletes.

Neil Shapiro

Volunteer Coach

Neil is a former UC Irvine Anteater where he played after graduating from Paso Robles High School in 2009. He moved to Central Texas in 2018 and continues his water polo career as an AquaTex masters athlete in addition to coaching our youth players with particular emphasis on center and center defenders.
