CAA Families, The first championship meet of the season has been posted and so I wanted to take a few minutes to provide some additional information about how these meets work and what to expect. Before I get to that, I wanted to remind everyone about how the swim season revolves around these championship meets. We are working hard at practices to qualify as many athletes as possible into these meets, so it’s very important for everyone to be coming to practice and entering the swim meets leading up to...

Parents, The South Texas Swimming annual meeting was held last weekend in San Antonio. At this meeting, all of the teams in the LSC meet to conduct the organization’s annual business, which includes electing board members, proposing and voting on changes to operations, approving the annual budget, and setting the championship meet schedule for the upcoming year. This year was a little different because the LSC was not able to set all of the championship meets on the calendar. Although incomplete, I am letting you know what is available at...

Parents, As the weather (finally) starts to cool off, I wanted to send out some information about the water temperature at the pool and offer some advice for keeping your swimmers nice and warm. First, maintaining the optimal water temperature can be tricky this time of year. The days are still warm enough to keep the water warm, but the water will cool off quickly as the days get shorter and the overnight temperatures start falling into the 50s and 60s. The ideal water temperature for swimming is 82 degrees....

One of my favorite quotes is “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re probably right.” The other day we were doing something challenging in dryland and in the pool. We hear it all the time, from both swimmers and their parents: “I don’t want to swim that event because I’m not good at that stroke.” “He’s so close to an A time in that stroke so I want him entered in that event.” “Those events are back-to-back and he’ll be too tired if he swims both of them.” All of these things may be correct, but it’s important to work through them the right way. One of my favorite stories on this subject is about a swimmer who swam...

Good morning parents, As we start our new season and start to post swim meets that our team will be attending, I wanted to send out an update about how swim meets work and try to answer some common questions that I get this time of the year. Each season, we have a lot of kids starting with us who have previously competed in a summer league season, and we also have swimmers who will be competing in their first swim meet. Even if you’ve been on the team in...

Parents, this is the first newsletter of the season with topics for parents about the sport of swimming and the swim season. Thank you for reading it and I hope you find it to be helpful. If you have any questions, please contact us. One of the most frequent questions that I’m asked this time of year is, “Do we need to come to practice every day?” This is usually followed by an explanation that the swimmer is doing another sport or activity and has conflicts with doing two things...

Swimmers of all ages have a diverse range of goals for their sport. These goals might be to learn how to swim a certain stroke or to make a certain time in an event by the end of the season. No matter what your goals are, swimming is excellent exercise and most swimmers see their lane buddies as part of their extended family. Here’s a primer on the alphabet soup of swimming, and how all these time standards work together and where to find them. Swimmers enter new events with...
