Team Santa Monica offers a progression of groups for all beginning skill levels for elementary age swimmers – from lessons to introductory training – up to advanced training for middle and high school aged swimmers and a high performance elite training group for current or future collegiate and professional swimmers. Furthermore, our age-specific and developmentally appropriate programs for all of our athletes is geared towards challenging and developing each individual. Whether the goal is to learn to swim at a young age, improve and maintain a love of competitive swimming through age group years or to compete at the highest, local, regional or national level, TSM has a program to help achieve your goal.

Seals (Ages 12 and younger)

This is the first level of our competitive team on the Age Group track. In this group, swimmers refine the stroke techniques developed as part of a learn-to-swim or pre-competitive program and introduce competitive training principles.

Equipment: Mesh bag [Arena], water bottle, kickboard [Arena], long fins, buoy [Arena], snorkel [Arena], TSM cap, goggles.

Practice Attendance: Minimum 2 practices per week. More is recommended.

Meet Attendance: Optional. Swimmers interested in moving up will need to attend a minimum of 1 swim meet per month.

Move Up: The next level after Seals is Age Group 1. Here are the requirements of moving up to AG1:

  • Consistently attend a minimum of 3 practices per week in Seals
  • Consistently attend 1 swim meet per month, including championship relays (if qualified)
  • Complete IMR events in their own age group in either SC or LC (no mixing
  • 10&U swimmers: Achieve a National BB time in 3 strokes and an IM event in own age group
  • 11-12 swimmers: Achieve a National B time in 3 strokes and an IM event in own age group
  • Demonstrate ability to appropriately manage the training load and focus of the next group up
  • Coach’s approval (this is a collaborative decision with input from multiple members of the coaching staff with swimmers’ attitude, practice performance, and meet performance all weighing heavily)

Age Group 1 (Ages 12 and younger)

This is the second level of our competitive team on the Age Group track. In this group swimmers continue to further refine their stroke technique while increasing their fitness and developing correct training habits. The length of sets and overall difficulty of training session increase. More challenging interval training is introduced. The training focus of this group will be to qualify for Age Group Championships.

Equipment: Mesh bag [Arena], water bottle, kickboard [Arena], long fins, buoy [Arena], snorkel [Arena], TSM cap, goggles.

Practice Attendance: Minimum of 3 practices per week required. More is recommended.

Meet Attendance: Attendance of all swim meets on the schedule, including championship relays, is required.

Move Up:

The next level after AG1 is Age Group 2. Here are the requirements of moving up to AG2:

  • Consistently attend a minimum of 4 practices per week in AG1
  • Consistently attend all swim meets on the schedule, including championship relays
  • Complete 10 & Under IMX events in either SC or LC (no mixing)
  • 10&U swimmers: Achieve a National A time in 3 strokes and an IM event in own age group
  • 11-12 swimmers: Achieve a National BB time in 3 strokes and an IM event in own age group
  • Demonstrate ability to appropriately manage the training load and focus of the next group up
  • Coach’s approval (this is a collaborative decision with input from multiple members of the coaching staff with swimmers’ attitude, practice performance, and meet performance all weighing heavily)

Age Group 2 (Pre High School)

This is the third level of our competitive team on the age group track. In this group, continual emphasis is placed on developing stroke technique at a more advanced level. Each session is structured so that swimmers have the opportunity to further increase their fitness and learn to cope with elementary endurance training in preparation for progression to the club's higher groups. The training focus of this group will be to qualify for Junior Olympics Championships.

Equipment: Mesh bag [Arena], water bottle, kickboard [Arena], long fins, buoy [Arena], snorkel [Arena], TSM cap, goggles, ankle strap, Roller (recommended).

Practice Attendance: Minimum of 4 practices per week is required. More is recommended.

Meet Attendance: Attendance of all swim meets on the schedule, including championship relays, is required

Move Up: The next level after AG2 is Age Group 3. Here are the requirements of moving up to AG3:

  • Consistently attend a minimum of 5 practices per week in Age Group 2
  • Consistently attend all swim meets on the schedule, including championship relays
  • Complete IMX events in own age group in either SC or LC (no mixing)
  • 10&U swimmers: Achieve a National AA time in 3 strokes and an IM event in own age group
  • 11-12 swimmers: Achieve a National A time in 3 strokes and an IM event in own age group
  • 13-14 female swimmers: Achieve a National A time in 3 strokes and an IM event in own age group
  • 13-14 male swimmers: Achieve a National BB time in 3 strokes and an IM event in own age group
  • Demonstrate ability to appropriately manage the training load and focus of the next group up
  • Coach’s approval (this is a collaborative decision with input from multiple members of the coaching staff with swimmers’ attitude, practice performance, and meet performance all weighing heavily)

Age Group 3

This is the first level at TSM on the high performance pathway. This group lays the technical foundation for a future swimming career (As an NCAA scholarship athlete and/or USA Team). For these athletes, swimming is their primary athletic pursuits, if not their sole sport. The training focus of this group will be to compete successfully at J.O.’s and eventually qualify for Sectionals.

Equipment: Mesh bag [Arena], water bottle, kickboard, short fins (Powerfin Pro) [Arena], buoy [Arena], snorkel [Arena], TSM cap, goggles, ankle strap, Paddles [Arena], Tempo Trainer, Roller, Theraband

Practice Attendance: Minimum of 6 practices per week is required. More is recommended.

Meet Attendance: Attendance of all swim meets on the schedule, including championship relays, is required

Move Up:

  • Demonstrate ability to appropriately manage the training load and focus of the next group up  
  • Coach’s approval (Coach's referal and Head Coach's approval. This is a collaborative decision with input from multiple members of the coaching staff with swimmers’ attitude, practice performance, and meet performance all weighing heavily).

Senior Development (13 & Older)

This is the first level of our competitive team on the Senior track. This group is for swimmers 13 and older who love the sport of swimming but are unable to commit to attending practices everyday or are unable to handle the workload that is offered on the High Performance Track.

Equipment: Mesh bag [Arena], water bottle, kickboard [Arena], short fins (Powerfin Pro) [Arena], buoy [Arena], snorkel [Arena], TSM cap, goggles.

Practice Attendance: Minimum 4 practices per week. More is recommended. Swimmers interested in moving up will need to attend a minimum of 6 practices per week.

Meet Attendance: Optional. Swimmers interested in moving up will need to attend a minimum of 1 swim meet per month.

Move Up: Swimmers will move up from this group based on their training needs and coach’s approval.

 

Senior 1

This group is intended for swimmers 13 and older who exhibit a high level of swimming and training ability, and swimming for TSM is their athletic activity. Generally, they have a skill level corresponding with JO finalists or young Sectional qualifiers. Swimmers in the Senior 1 group are expected to make a commitment to attend 8 sessions each week. They must be able to attend all the sessions required by their individual training plan. Entry to this group will be dependent on the athletes’ long term commitment to high performance swimming, the coaching staff’s assessment of suitability, and their parents’ support of the requirements for group membership. The main focus of the Senior 1 group is to prepare and develop athletes to qualify for Sectionals and Futures.

Equipment: Mesh bag [Arena], water bottle, kickboard [Arena], short fins (Powerfin Pro) [Arena], buoy [Arena], snorkel [Arena], TSM cap, goggles, ankle strap, Paddles (Arena), Tempo Trainer, Roller, theraband.

Practice Attendance: Minimum of 6 practices per week is required.

Meet Attendance: Attendance of all swim meets on the schedule, including championship relays, is required.

Move Up:

  • Demonstrate ability to appropriately manage the training load and focus of the next group up.
  • Coach’s approval (this is a collaborative decision with input from multiple members of the coaching staff with swimmers’ attitude, practice performance, and meet performance all weighing heavily).

 

Senior 2

This group is intended for swimmers 13 and older who exhibit a high level of swimming and training ability, and swimming for TSM is their athletic activity. NATIONAL GROUP

This group is for College/Post-Grad/Pro level swimmers. Swimmers in the TSM National group make a commitment to attend 10 sessions each week. They must be able to attend all the sessions required by their individual training plan. 

 

Entry to this group will be dependent on the athletes’ long term commitment to high performance swimming, the coaching staff’s assessment of suitability, and their parents’ consent. 

 

Required equipment: pull buoy, fins, training snorkel, roller, Thera Band.
