The Woodlands Swim Team Age Group Rubric
The goal of The Woodlands Swim Team is to provide a developmentally appropriate training progression from the youngest novice athlete to the national level. Each level of the TWST program is focused on technique first followed by a progressive training load where athletes are continually challenged and engaged.
 
At TWST, we teach and perfect all four competitive strokes and emphasize the importance of streamlining, kicking, body position and body awareness.  Our program is designed to give every athlete the opportunity to excel, the confidence to succeed, and the chance to swim in college.
 
SENIOR PROGRAM
 
Senior 1
Athletes in this group should have at least 1 sectional times. Athletes should conduct themselves as the embodiment of TWST values and leadership.  Athletes in the Senior 1 group should take part in all aspects of training and competition including water, dryland, and weight training sessions as deemed appropriate by the Lead Coach.  Athletes should also be striving to take their sport to the collegiate level.  In general, only HS (9th grade+) aged 15 and over athletes will be considered for this group. The goal of the Senior 1 group is to prepare swimmers for National level competition.  Admittance to Senior 1 will be through invitation by the Senior 1 coaching staff.
 
Senior 2
This group is for HS aged athletes committed to the TWST program and striving to reach the Senior 1 group.  Athletes in the groups are committed to competing at the LSC and regional level competition as advised by Lead Coach.  Athletes in the group are expected to embrace the TWST values of commitment, hard work, and strive for excellence both in and out of the pool. Base ranges for training include: freestyle (1:20), IM (1:30) and kicking (1:45) Athletes will be invited to this group by the Senior 2 coaching staff.
 
AGE GROUP PROGRAM
 
White 1
Primarily composed of athletes who will be 13-14 at their season-ending Championship Meet, this group will prepare athletes for the Senior Programs at TWST.  Athletes should demonstrate a strong self-reliance and ability to conceptualize and apply advanced technical elements and advanced training modes. Athletes must meet school 15 hour OCPE requirements and shoot for 90% attendance.  Base ranges for training intervals include: freestyle (1:20), IM (1:30) and kicking (1:50) Athletes will be invited into this group by the Head Age-Group coach and the White 1 Lead Coach.
 
White 2
This is the core training group for TWST athletes who will be 13-15 at their season-ending Championship meet.  White 2 athletes should be striving to compete at local competitions and preparing to move into White 1 or the senior groups.  Athletes should have previous swim experience to be placed into this group.  Athletes will be invited to this group by the Head Age-Group Coach and the White 2 Lead Coach.
 
Green 1
This group primarily composed of athletes who will be 11-12 at their season-ending Championship meet.  Athletes in this group should be focused on achieving at the local and state levels.   Athletes should be developing self-reliance and begin goal setting.  Green 1 will still be strongly technique driven but aerobic training will be a component.  Training will focus on IMX events and athletes will be competent in every event and distance through each season. Training base ranges will include: freestyle (1:35), IM (1:45) and kicking (2:00). Athletes will be invited to this group by the Head Age-Group coach and the Green 1 Lead Coach.
 
Green 2
This is the core group for athletes who will be 11-12 at their season-ending Championship meet.  Athletes in this group are focused on competing at the local level.   Athletes should be developing guided self-reliance and begin understanding the importance of goal setting.  Green 2 is strongly technique driven while building a strong aerobic base. Training will focus on developing all strokes and the all-around young athlete.  Athletes will be invited to this group by the Head Age-Group coach and the Green 2 Lead Coach.
 
Black 1
This group is composed of athletes who will be 10&Under at their season-ending Championship meet. This group is highly technique driven with the majority of training focused on skill development. There will be progressive challenges as the athletes mature.  Athletes in this group will be introduced to goal setting exercises. Training base ranges will include: freestyle (1:50), non-free (2:00) and kicking (2:15). Athletes will be invited to this group by the Head Age-group Coach and the Black 1 Lead Coach.
 
Black 2
This is the core training group for athletes who will be 10&under at their season-ending Championship meet.  This group is for developing swimmers and is highly technique driven.  An emphasis will be placed on teaching, skill mastery and skill progression. Athletes will be invited to this group by the Head Age-Group Coach and the Black 2 Lead Coach.
 
 
DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM
 
Sharks
This group is for swimmers 9-years of age and younger. The Shark group should be proficient in all 4 competitive strokes. The Shark training will emphasize skills and drills for all four strokes. We will increase competence in competitive skills such as starts/turns and hone/address practice skills. i.e. using the pace clock. Swimmers will also expand their knowledge of competitive swimming at meets. Progress in this group will be measured by technique, efficiency and mastery of skills. Practices will be offered 5 weekdays per week for 75 Minutes; athletes may choose 3 days to attend each week.
 
DolFins
This group is for primarily 8-year-olds and younger who can complete 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke, and who demonstrate legal skills in either breaststroke or butterfly. Training will emphasize skills and drills for all four strokes. We will introduce competitive skills such as starts and turns and and begin addressing practice skills such a reading a pace clock. Progress in this group will be measured on refining technique and not on speed in the water. Practices will be offered 5 days per week for 60 minutes and athletes may choose 3 days.
 
Nemos
This group is primarily for swimmers 8-years of age and younger who can proficiently swim 25 yards Freestyle and Backstroke. Swimmers should also have some knowledge of the other breaststroke and butterfly. The primary focus will be placed on teaching all strokes using drills and motor skills, improving, and strengthening kicking technique and learning body and head position and balance in the water. As the season progresses swimmers will be introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Goals for the group will be measured on progress in skill development and not on speed in the water. Practices will be offered 5 days per week for 45 minutes and athletes may choose 3 days.
