Matthew Whitney Head Coach/Gold Coach

Coach Matt has been the head coach of the Clearfield City Aquatics Team since 2012.  His immediate career objective is to develop the team structure into a more parent involved team.  The end result of this restructuring is to provide new and beneficial opportunities for the swimmers that will see the team through to a level of success that CCAT has never before achieved.

He is currently employed full-time at Hill Air Force Base.  He holds a master’s degree in business administration from Weber State University and a bachelor’s degree in Information Management from Utah Valley University.  He started coaching in 2008 when he developed a workout group affiliated with US Masters Swimming.

Coach Matt has been in the water during his life more than he has been out of it.  He grew up in a little town near the beach in Southern California.  He spent all of his time surfing and swimming in the ocean prior to his competitive career.  He has fond memories of the summer days where he, his mom, and older brother would walk to the beach and play around in the surf and sand.  From those early days he went on to play water polo on private clubs and in high school, and to swim competitively at the national club level, and with the NCAA in his first year at Brigham Young University.

He is currently level two certified with the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA).  He has completed the level three, four, and five education requirements, and hopes to accomplish the achievement requirement for level 3 certification by 2018.  In the summer of 2013, Coach Matt was selected to be the 11/12 age group coach for the Utah Western Zone team.  In the summer of 2014, he was selected to be the head coach for the Utah Western Zone Team.  So far he has had a lot of success with CCAT but feels as though the team’s greatest accomplishments are yet to come.

Jason Horne Silver Coach

I joined the Clearfield Aquatic Center team 2014; first as a Master’s coach in the early AM, and second, as a CCAT coach.  I have been married for 16 years, father of two children (1 boy/1 girl), and I don’t look or act my age…in fact, when my wife introduces our family, I’m introduced as “child #3.”

Since 2008, I have been dabbling in the triathlon world.  I have competed in shorter course races like Sprint and Olympic distance all the way up to the longer course races, like half ironman and full ironman.  Racing triathlon has taken me all over the U.S.  Am I crazy?  Yes.

I’m up at 4 a.m. to train every morning (even on the weekends), and I usually get in a quick workout during my lunch hour.  I do this to free up my evenings so that I have plenty of time to get into trouble with child #1 and child #2.

I’ve enjoyed working with both swim groups and look forward to many more years in the water!
