Stephen Hennessy CEO, Senior Coach

Coach Steve has always been a proud advocate for swimming as a competitive sport and as a means for maintaining fitness.  As a swimmer, Coach Steve was a high school and collegiate All-American.  He even qualified for the 1972 Olympic Trials.  Coach Steve initially worked for CGBD in 1980s developing Senior and National Team swimmers.  Steve rejoined the CGBD coaching staff in 2000 as a full-time age group coach.  In 2001, Steve signed on as Age Group Head Coach and Team Administrator taking on the administrative functions of the team, ultimately becoming the Head Coach in 2008.  During his tenure as a coach, Steve has developed several nationally ranked Top-16 swimmers, Junior National qualifiers, Senior National qualifiers, National Age Group record holders, and Olympic Trial qualifiers.  Coach Steve has been a zones coach and in 2006 and 2007 he was Age Group Coach of the Year.  Coach Steve lives in Yorktown with his wife Sandy. 

Jon Bierie Head Coach

Coach Jack joined the CGBD staff in 2006 after coaching with several other teams in the area.  As a swimmer, Coach Jack achieved Top 16 national rankings, reached the finals at National Championships, and participated in the 1984 Olympic Trials.  Coach Jack brings over 20 years of experience to the team.  During his tenure, he has developed swimmers who have qualified for the USA Swimming National Junior Team, as well as one swimmer who participated in 2007 FINA World Championships.  Coach Jack loves mountain biking, surfing, off-road triathlons, and camping.  He currently lives in Williamsburg with wife Irene and their two dogs.   

John Poorman Assistant Head Coach

Coach John joined the team in October 2014.  Coach John began swimming in seventh grade and continued through college at the University of the Cumberlands.  Coach John brings with him a wide range of experience from developing age group swimmers to helping high school swimmers hone their skills as they try to move towards the collegiate level of the sport.  Coach John lives in Toano with his wife Kerry, and their three children. 

Jodi Clark Head Age Group Coach. Lead Coach BMAC

Coach Jodi joined the CGBD staff in 2011.  After beginning her coaching career at the age of 17 with the Plymouth Canton Cruisers in Michigan, Coach Jodi shared her experiences with Riverside’s Cruisers program and Unique Swimming.  With an infectious energy, Coach Jodi leads the age group program teaching swimmers technique and sportsmanship.  Coach Jodi lives in Newport News with her husband, children, and their four dogs.  

Jeffrey Kincaid Head Senior Coach

Coach Jeff is joining the unified CGBD team for the 2020-2021 season.  Coach Jeff began his swimming career with the Bounty Otters in Norfolk, Virginia.  During the course of his athletic career, Coach Jeff swam for Lake Taylor High School and Old Dominion Aquatic Club (ODAC).  Coach Jeff brings with him 25 years of coaching experience which includes training athletes at all stages of age group and senior swimming.  During his tenure as head coach of Southeastern Virginia Aquatics (SEVA), Coach Jeff developed swimmers who have competed in Winter Junior Nationals, Senior Nationals, and NCSAs. Coach Jeff has served as the assistant manager at the Eastern Zone Camp and the boy’s team manager coach at National Select Camp in Colorado.  Coach Jeff currently lives in Poquoson with his wife, Mary, and his Havanese dog, Pele. 

Michael Williams Lead WM Coach, Senior Coach

Coach Michael is joining the CGBD staff for the 2020-2021 season.  Coach Michael began his swimming career at the age of nine with RSA in North Carolina.  He continued swimming as an athlete UNC Wilmington, and then transitioned to the role of an assistant coach with UNCW and then NC State.  Coach Michael moved to coach age group swimmers when he assumed the role of a developmental coach with the Marlins of Raleigh.  He then served as the head coach of Cape Fear Aquatic Club.  Coach Michael has also worked as an assistant age group coach and assistant senior level coach with Virginia Gators.  He will be working as the Williamsburg Lead Coach as well as working with our senior level swimmers.  When Coach Michaeli is not on the pool deck, he loves to read and watch basketball. 

McKenzie Smith Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

Coach McKenzie joined the CGBD staff in 2017.  Coach McKenzie began her swimming career with summer league, transitioned to cruisers, and culminated with her experiences with Typhoon Aquatics and CGBD.  As a competitive swimmer, Coach McKenzie grew as an athlete under the guidance of Coach Jack and Coach Steve.  Coach McKenzie has coaching experience with summer league and high school swimming.  When she’s not on deck, Coach McKenzie is enjoying anything outdoors with her husband and dog, Gizmo. 

Ariel Howard Asst. Head Age Group Coach

Coach Ariel joined the CGBD staff in 2014.  Coach Ariel found her love of the water when she began swimming summer league at the age of 12.  She continued swimming competitively until college when she attended Christopher Newport University obtaining a degree in Communications and Social Media.  Coach Ariel has worked with swimmers from developmental groups through senior programs.  Coach Ariel has one dog named Captain Jack who also loves swimming. 

David Henderson Dir. Stroke School, Lead HS Prep Coach

Coach Dave is joining the unified CGBD for the 2020-2021 season.  Coach Dave began his swimming career at the age 5 and has actively continued with the sport since that time.   After graduating from Old Dominion University with a degree in Sports Management, although he had a job offer with Chicago White Sox, Coach Dave became a part time coach with Fort Eustis Aquatics (FTE).   Since that time, Coach Dave has served as the Head Coach of SEVA Aquatics, he’s worked as a Zones coach 8 times, and has had 3 swimmers attend Olympic Trials.  Coach Dave will be applying that experience and knowledge with our earliest swimmers by working as the Director of Stroke School.  Coach Dave is the proud father of two men, Tyler (27)  and Jonathan (24).    


Danyelle Travis Age Group Coach

Coach Danyelle joined the CGBD staff in 2018 after stepping away from coaching for a few years.  As a swimmer, Coach Danyelle swam for CGBD and PAST.  She began teaching lessons and coaching at Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center during the summers while attending Kenyon College.  As a coach, Danyelle enjoys working with the developmental and age group programs.  During the day, Coach Danyelle is a high school English teacher. She currently lives in Newport News, Virginia with her husband.  


Jihan Minson Age Group Coach

Coach Jihan joined CGBD in 2004.  She was Head Developmental Coach from 2009-2012 before stepping away to be a stay at home mom. She returned to the CGBD coaching staff in 2019. Coach Jihan grew up swimming in NJ before swimming for the University of Rhode Island. She began supervising Swim America lessons and started her coaching career with Eastern Express Swimming at 17. Coach Jihan loves working with the developmental program. She currently lives in Carrollton with her husband, children, and two dogs. 

Cynthia Marstellar Age Group Coach

Coach Cindy joined the CGBD staff in 2005.  She began her swimming career as a blue dolphin at the age of 8 excelling throughout her career.  Coach Cindy went to James Madison University where she continued to dominate the sport receiving CAA Swimmer of the Year and was a two time Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and conference championship.  Coach Cindy had developed a wide range of coaching experience through summer league, high school, and age group swimming.  When she is not on the pool deck, Coach Cindy is a guidance counselor at Menchville High School.  She currently resides in Newport News with her husband and children.

Kelley Crisci Age Group Coach

Coach Kelley joined the CGBD staff in 2018.  Coach Kelley had an illustrious age group swimming career beginning at the age of 6 which culminated in her swimming for William and Mary.  Now, in addition to coaching for CGBD, Coach Kelley is also an assistant coach at William and Mary for the men’s and women’s swim teams and the head coach for the Ford’s Colony Killer Whales summer league team.  Before immersing herself completely in the world of swimming, Coach Kelly was a kindergarten teacher.  Coach Kelley currently resides in Williamsburg with her husband and children. 

Matthew Creelman Age Group Coach

Coach Matt joined the CGBD staff in spring 2020.  Coach Matt began his swimming career in LaGrange, Illinois and continued competing through high school and his four years in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  Coach Matt and his family settled in the area upon his retirement from the Coast Guard in 2009.  He has been involved in coaching with area swim teams since that time.  When he’s not on the pool deck, you will see him in the stands cheering for his daughter who is currently a swimmer with CGBD.  His twin boys are beginning their respective college careers this fall, and he couldn’t be more proud. 

MaryElizabeth Warhol Age Group Coach

Coach MaryElizabeth is starting her first season at CGBD.  Coach MaryElizabeth grew up swimming with CGBD and Typhoon Aquatics.  During her time as a swimmer, she set multiple state and team records and participated in 2012 Olympic Trials.  Coach MaryElizabeth graduated from James Madison University in 2017 with a BS in Exercise Science -- Kinesiology and from Virginia Commonwealth in 2020 with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.  Coach MaryElizabeth lives in Williamsburg with her fiance Drew and goldendoodle Finn. 

Brian Deal Developmental Coach

Coach Brian is joining the unified CGBD swim team for the 2020-2021 season.  As a life long swimmer, Coach Brian swam competitively with Typhoon Aquatics and CGBD.  Prior to becoming a coach, Coach Brian worked as a horse trainer and taught riding lessons.  Coach Brian then transitioned to teaching adaptive swim lessons and working with special needs swimmers.  From there, Coach Brian joined the Riverdale Rays as head coach of the summer league team.  He joined the SEVA staff just before March 2020.  When not on the pool deck, Coach Brian is a licensed realtor with Long and Foster.  

Leigh-Ann Knapp Masters Coach, Senior Coach

Coach Leigh-Ann joined the CGBD staff in 2016.  Her swimming career began with summer league swimming at the age of 6.  Coach Leigh-Ann moved to year round swimming when she joined CGBD at the age of 14.  Upon graduation, Coach Leigh-Ann swam for two years at Wingate, then transferred and completed her athletic and academic career at Old Dominion University.  Coach Leigh-Ann is a horticulture enthusiast and loves caring for and learning about greenery. 

Lori Sprott Senior Coach, Strength and Fitness Coach

Coach Lori is joining the unified CGBD team for the 2020-2021 season.  Coach Lori began her swimming career at the age of 5 with summer league and high school competition.  She continued at Virginia Tech but was forced to stop due to a shoulder injury.  She began coaching with WJCC and Peninsula Catholic Swimming.  Coach Lori is bringing seven years of experience with her as a strength and conditioning coach as well as experience coaching various levels of age group swimmers.  When she is not on the pool deck, Coach Lori is ACE Orthopaedic Specialist and ACE CPT.  She currently lives in Hampton, Virginia with her husband and two teenage children. 

Lisa Kanak Age Group Coach

Coach Lisa joined the CGBD staff during the 2019-2020 season.  Coach Lisa began her swimming career with Morgan Hill/San Jose Superfish in California.  She participated actively with the team until she moved to Georgia with her family during her high school years.  Coach Lisa began coaching while in Italy with her family.  She worked with the team as an official and as the fundraising and concessions chair until she became Head Coach in 2017.  She is currently working with the HS Prep Group.  Coach Lisa resides in Hampton with her husband Shaun and their children.  When not on the deck with CGBD Coach Lisa works with the Willow Oaks summer league team in Hampton.  

Ian Peverall Assistant Age Group Coach

Coach Ian joined the CGBD staff during the 2019-2020 season.  He began his swimming career as a way to make friends at his local summer pool.  As a result of his summer league experiences, Coach Ian began swimming for his local USS team through high school.   Coach Ian is taking that same passion for the sport and applying it to his coaching career. When Coach Ian is not on the pool deck, you will find him supporting his beloved Washington Nationals. 

Nicholas Vaka Assistant Age Group Coach

Coach Nick joined the CGBD coaching staff during the 2019-2020 season.  Coach Nick began his swimming career at the age of 4 when he joined his local summer league team, the Woodlea Watermocs.  Coach Nick transitioned from a swimmer to a coach and served as the head coach for the Woodlea Watermocs for the past three years.  He is currently a student at the College of William and Mary majoring in geology with a focus on metamorphosed igneous rocks.  

Nathan Kimbel Assistant Age Group Coach

Coach Nathan joined the CGBD coaching staff during the 2018-2019 season.  Coach Nathan started swimming competitively with the Smithfield YMCA.  During the course of his career, he swam with both CGBD and SEVA.  Coach Nathan completed his swimming career this past spring with Old Dominion University when he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology.  Coach Nathan began his coaching career with the Coventry Sailfish and then moved to being a developmental coach with Tidewater Aquatic Club (TAC).   One of Coach Nathan’s proudest moments was being part of the 2015 CGBD team that won sectionals.
