Stephen Hennessy CEO

Coach Steve has always been a proud advocate for swimming as a competitive sport and as a means for maintaining fitness.  As a swimmer, Coach Steve was a high school and collegiate All-American.  He even qualified for the 1972 Olympic Trials.  Coach Steve initially worked for CGBD in 1980s developing Senior and National Team swimmers.  Steve rejoined the CGBD coaching staff in 2000 as a full-time age group coach.  In 2001, Steve signed on as Age Group Head Coach and Team Administrator taking on the administrative functions of the team, ultimately becoming the Head Coach in 2008.  During his tenure as a coach, Steve has developed several nationally ranked Top-16 swimmers, Junior National qualifiers, Senior National qualifiers, National Age Group record holders, and Olympic Trial qualifiers.  Coach Steve has been a zones coach and in 2006 and 2007 he was Age Group Coach of the Year.  Coach Steve lives in Yorktown with his wife Sandy. 

Jon Bierie Head Coach

Coach Jack joined the CGBD staff in 2006 after coaching with several other teams in the area.  As a swimmer, Coach Jack achieved Top 16 national rankings, reached the finals at National Championships, and participated in the 1984 Olympic Trials.  Coach Jack brings over 20 years of experience to the team.  During his tenure, he has developed swimmers who have qualified for the USA Swimming National Junior Team, as well as one swimmer who participated in 2007 FINA World Championships.  Coach Jack loves mountain biking, surfing, off-road triathlons, and camping.  He currently lives in Williamsburg with wife Irene and their two dogs.   

Jodi Clark Head Age Group Coach

Coach Jodi joined the CGBD staff in 2011.  After beginning her coaching career at the age of 17 with the Plymouth Canton Cruisers in Michigan, Coach Jodi shared her experiences with Riverside’s Cruisers program and Unique Swimming.  With an infectious energy, Coach Jodi leads the age group program teaching swimmers technique and sportsmanship.  Coach Jodi lives in Newport News with her husband, children, and their four dogs.  

Sarah Browning Assistant Head Age Group Coach

Coach Sarah joined the CGBD staff in March of 2022 after her moving to the Hampton Roads area. As a swimmer, Coach Sarah swam competitively since she was 7 years old. She achieved NCSA Junior National times, was a Virginia high school 4A Championship state champion, and sset multiple team and state records.  Coach Sarah also swam Division 1 in college. She has been working with swimmers on the pool since she was 15 years old. Coach Sarah became a USA Swimming certified coach in 2018 and has worked with a few teams in the Richmond area before moving to Hampton. Coach Sarah lives with her fiance and lloves to hike, workout, & be in the water.

Jihan Minson Dolphins Swims Director

Coach Jihan joined CGBD in 2004.  She was Head Developmental Coach, Assistant Office Manager, and lessons site supervisor from 2009-2012 before stepping away to be a stay at home mom. She returned to the CGBD coaching staff in 2019 as an age group coach before becoming the Director of Dolphin Swims SwimAmerica program in 2021.  Coach Jihan is currently the Virginia Swimming Disability/Diversity, Equity and Inclusion chair and loves working to grow the sport of swimming.  She is also a USA paraswimming certified coach. She grew up swimming in NJ before swimming at the University of Rhode Island. Jihan has been working with kids in the pool since she was 14 years old. Coach Jihan loves baking and traveling. She currently lives in Carrollton with her husband, children, and three dogs. 

Chris Rowe Senior Coach

Coach Chris grew up swimming in the Hampton Roads area, ending up at Auburn where he was a five time All American as well as a semi finalist at US Trials.  After spending 20 plus years in the hospitality industry as a controller,  he broke out of the basement offices and began teaching athletes the joy and passion of swimming.  His coaching philosophy is centered around proper technique, adequate conditioning, and confidence building. Teaching the athletes to be their own best coach and empowering them to  be accountable for their goals are the cornerstones that build a solid foundation for the swimmers. Chris has been fortunate to have coached several accomplished swimmers.  As a Masters coach, he had one World Record, one American Record and one marathon swimmer. On the Age Group side, he has helped several national top 16 swimmers earn their accolades and he has been named twice to the ASCA Top 50 Age Group coaches.  While in the North Texas Swimming LSC, he served as AG Chair and as the AG Zone Head Coach.

 

McKenzie Smith Head Strength Coach, Senior Coach

Coach McKenzie joined the CGBD staff in 2017.  Coach McKenzie began her swimming career with summer league, transitioned to cruisers, and culminated with her experiences with Typhoon Aquatics and CGBD.  As a competitive swimmer, Coach McKenzie grew as an athlete under the guidance of Coach Jack and Coach Steve.  Coach McKenzie has coaching experience with summer league and high school swimming.  When she’s not on deck, Coach McKenzie is enjoying anything outdoors with her husband and dog, Gizmo.

Matthew Creelman Age Group Coach

Coach Matt joined the CGBD staff in spring 2020.  Coach Matt began his swimming career in LaGrange, Illinois and continued competing through high school and his four years in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  Coach Matt and his family settled in the area upon his retirement from the Coast Guard in 2009.  He has been involved in coaching with area swim teams since that time.  When he’s not on the pool deck, you will see him in the stands cheering for his daughter who is currently a swimmer with CGBD.  His twin boys are beginning their respective college careers this fall, and he couldn’t be more proud. 

Brian Deal Age Group Coach


Coach Brian joined the unified CGBD swim team for the 2020-2021 season.  As a lifelong swimmer, Coach Brian swam competitively with Typhoon Aquatics and CGBD.  Prior to becoming a coach, Coach Brian worked as a horse trainer and taught riding lessons.  Coach Brian then transitioned to teaching adaptive swim lessons and working with special needs swimmers.  From there, Coach Brian joined the Riverdale Rays as head coach of the summer league team.  He joined the SEVA staff just before March 2020.  When not on the pool deck, Coach Brian is a licensed realtor with Long and Foster.

Lisa Kanak Senior Coach

Coach Lisa joined the CGBD staff during the 2019-2020 season.  Coach Lisa began her swimming career with Morgan Hill/San Jose Superfish in California.  She participated actively with the team until she moved to Georgia with her family during her high school years.  Coach Lisa began coaching while in Italy with her family.  She worked with the team as an official and as the fundraising and concessions chair until she became Head Coach in 2017.  She is currently working with the HS Prep Group.  Coach Lisa resides in Hampton with her husband Shaun and their children.  When not on the deck with CGBD Coach Lisa works with the Willow Oaks summer league team in Hampton.  

MaryElizabeth Warhol Strength and Conditioning Coach

Coach MaryElizabeth is starting her first season at CGBD.  Coach MaryElizabeth grew up swimming with CGBD and Typhoon Aquatics.  During her time as a swimmer, she set multiple state and team records and participated in 2012 Olympic Trials.  Coach MaryElizabeth graduated from James Madison University in 2017 with a BS in Exercise Science -- Kinesiology and from Virginia Commonwealth in 2020 with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.  Coach MaryElizabeth lives in Williamsburg with her fiance Drew and goldendoodle Finn. 

Danyelle Travis Site Supervisor, Dolphin Swims

Coach Danyelle joined the CGBD staff in 2018 after stepping away from coaching for a few years.  As a swimmer, Coach Danyelle swam for CGBD and PAST.  She began teaching lessons and coaching at Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center during the summers while attending Kenyon College.  As a coach, Danyelle enjoys working with the developmental and age group programs.  During the day, Coach Danyelle is a high school English teacher. She currently lives in Newport News, Virginia.  

 

Bridget McMullen Site Supervisor, Dolphin Swims

Bridget joined CGBD in 2016 after a 20 year Air Force career.  She started her swim career at age 2 and joined year round club swimming at the age of 8 and continued until age 18.  She started teaching swimming at age 16 for summer league,  as a WSI with the Red Cross and through the Swim America Program until age 25.  She volunteered as a swim coach during her various assignments with the Air Force around the world. She throughly enjoys teaching young children the love of swimming.  Swimming is a life long passion for Bridget.  She joined Masters swimming at age 32 and has continued swimming ever since. Bridget’s three children also swim for CGBD, Andrew, Rose and Nora.  Her husband Robert recently started doing underwater Hockey.  The pool and swimming are a main topic of conversation at the McMullen’s house!  They live in Yorktown with their two adorable beagles Roxie and Teddy and two crazy cats Velvet and Brooke.

Lori Sprott Age Group Coach

Coach Lori joined the unified CGBD team for the 2020-2021 season.  Coach Lori began her swimming career at the age of 5 with summer league and high school competitions.  She continued at Virginia Tech but was forced to stop due to a shoulder injury.  She began coaching with WJCC and Peninsula Catholic Swimming.  Coach Lori is bringing seven years of experience with her as a strength and conditioning coach as well as experience coaching various levels of age group swimmers.  When she is not on the pool deck, Coach Lori is ACE Orthopaedic Specialist and ACE CPT.  She currently lives in Hampton, Virginia with her husband and two teenage children.
