Benjamin Hair Memorial Scholarship

Benjamin Hair came to our team as a freshman at Virginia Tech in the Fall of 2006.  From the moment he set foot on the pool deck, Ben was a model "triple threat."  He was a fine athlete and competitive swimmer at all levels, even choosing to continue training and competing with SWAT (now HOKI) while attending Virginia Tech.  He was a stand out scholar, who graduated with honors from Albemarle High School, posthumously earned his B.S. in Biology from Virginia Tech, and completed his first semester in the Doctor of Pharmacy program at Shenandoah University with outstanding marks.  But most significantly, Ben was a true humanitarian who selflessly spread joy and shared his love of life with all those around him.

Benjamin was admired and revered by his peers, coaches, and team parents who all knew him as the ever-smiling, gentle, kind role model for the young people around him.

He also brought to the swimming world two fantastic parents, Gordon and Brenda Hair, who have unselfishly brought their energies and expertise to our local New River Valley swim program and even to the wider Virginia and National swimming scene.

Benjamin was killed in a car accident on the morning of December 13, 2009, but Ben will never be forgotten.  The positive energy that he exuded touched the lives of everybody that he met from this team and all around Virginia.

Each year, New River Valley Aquatics honors this fine young individual by giving away a scholarship to a senior level swimmer entering a new phase of his or her life who exemplifies the traits that Benjamin exhibited daily: hard-working, enthusiastic, friendly, and generally an outstanding individual.

NRVA General Scholarship Fund

New River Valley Aquatics, which is the sponsoring organization of H2okie Aquatics, is committed to providing opportunities to every swimmer that wishes to participate in the sport.  Each year, we offer a limited number of need-based scholarships to families in financial need or with extenuating circumstances.  These are awarded on a "first come, first serve" basis, and scholarship recipient families may be asked to accept additional volunteer responsibilities.  Additionally, local organizations may choose to support the community and donate to our need-based scholarship fund.  Families in need that wish to join and feel they may qualify for this scholarship should email the Team Registrar.

Organizations or individuals who would like to donate to the fund and help sponsor a swimmer should contact the Fundraising Admin.  You may choose to donate anonymously or to receive recognition for your donation.  For more information, visit the Donations Page.

Most individuals, families, local businesses, and organizations choose to partially sponsor a swimmer with a one time donation to our general scholarship fund.  Any amount donated to the scholarship fund is greatly appreciated and will be used to improve the health, fitness, and fun of a child in the New River Valley.
