The Virginia Gators is a developmental swim team that promotes personal excellence through competitive swimming.

Programs and Schedules

The Virginia Gators offer training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels from our developmental programs for young and beginning swimmers to an elite national training group. It is the goal of the Gators Swim Club to offer age specific training that is geared towards challenging and developing each individual to the best of their abilities. Registration for all Gator programs is completely online through our TeamUnify website. Please contact if you require assistance or have questions.

Training Standards:

The Virginia Gators have developed training standards as a guide for parents and swimmers when choosing Gator programs. These standards assure that the athletes in any given group are able to engage in the level and types of training that are designed by the coaches to induce improvement to the next level. The standards are a mix of tangible and intangible factors that include, but are not limited to, age, emotional maturity, commitment, physical development, and attitude and were developed using the American Development Model for Swimming created by USA Swimming. The practice and performance standards can found at each group tab. The Head Coach will have final approval for all group placements, after considering practice and performance standards and intangible factors.

Beginning Swimmers (KickStart Program) (Ages 4-8)

The KickStart program is for beginning swimmers who cannot yet swim one length of the pool unassisted. This small group program offers 2 30-minute lessons per week to teach your young swimmer the basics of each stroke and learn confidence in the water through fun instruction.

Practices: 3:45-4:14pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. (possible addition of Monday/Wednesday group in 2019)

Developing Group (Ages 5-9)

Focus on developing the four competitive strokes, starts and turns, and basic training concepts. Swimmers should be able to complete one length of the pool unassisted on front and back and listen attentively to coaches. Participation in meets is encouraged as appropriate, but not required.

Practices are offered 3 days per week, choose Group A: Mon, Wed, Fri 4:15-5:15 pm or Group B: Tues, Thurs, Fri 4:15-5:15 pm.

Progressing Group (Ages 9-14)

Focus on progressively adding to stroke competency in all four competitive strokes, fine-tuning mechanics, and increasing strength and endurance. Participation in meets is encouraged. 3 Day and 6 Day practice options are offered. Swimmers are encouraged to attend 3 practices per week. Swimmers desiring to progress to the next practice group level should choose the 6 Day Progressing Group. Check here for Progressing Group Practice Standards for participating in this group.

Practices: 3 Day Group A: Mon./Weds./Fri. or Group B: Tues./Thurs./Fri. 5:15 pm-6:45 pm.

Progressing Plus Group (Ages 9-14)

This group is a highly committed group of younger swimmers who desire to compete regularly at the Regional and National level. They work to increase their technical competency and endurance by attending 4-6 in-water practices per week and plus dryland workouts.  Check here for Progressing Plus Training Standards for participation in this group.

Practices: Mon.-Fri. 5:15 pm-6:45 pm and Saturdays 10:30 am-12:00 pm.

Advancing Swimmers (Ages 14-18)

Experienced swimmers with a desire to advance their training to the highest level in this group focused on competitive training, perfecting stroke mechanics, building endurance, and fine-tuning race techniques. This group follows a training plan created with the needs of the group as a whole in mind. Participation in frequent meets is encouraged, including regional and higher championship meets. Swimmers are expected to practice 4-6 times per week consistently. Check here for Advancing Group Training Standards for participation in this group.

Practices: Mon.-Fri. 6:45 pm-8:45 pm and Sat. 8:00 am-10:30 am. This group offers only a 6-day option due to the minimum training needs of this skill level.

National Group (Ages 14-18)

Our most committed swimmers with a record of dedicated training, emotional maturity, and desire to reach their maximum potential. These swimmers aspire to National level competition and collegiate swimming. This group follows a highly individualized 12-month training cycle that expects attendance at 7-8 practices per week, including double workout days and a team dryland program. Requirements for this group can be found here: National Group Minimum Standards. Interested swimmers must receive permission from the Head Coach to join the Leading Group.

Practices: Mon.-Fri. 6:45-8: 45 pm, Mon, Wed 6:00-7:30 am and Saturdays 8:00 am-10:30 am.

High School Prep Program (Sep.-Nov.)

The High School Prep Program offers 5 practices per week from September to November to fully prepare swimmers in 9th-12th grade for a successful high school swim season.

Summer Gators (June-July)

Summer Gators runs from the end of May through July for selected swimmers in the Progressing and Advancing Groups as an add-on for experienced, competitive swimmers interested in continuing to build strength and stamina and compete in Long Course USA Swimming meets. Click here for more information.
