Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend off celebrating Apple Blossom Festival!  This week our team heads to Claude Moore Park for our second long course meet of the season.  This meet will start with a short course meet on Friday afternoon followed by a 2-day long course meet Saturday and Sunday.  The short course vs long course sessions are posted under two separate event pages.  They are considered two separate meets.  The format for the long course meet has been changed from the original schedule for Sat. and Sun.  They combined the 10 and under session with the 11/12 session into a 12 and under session in the morning and a 13 and over session in the afternoon.  They also combined all boys and girl events into mixed events.  Normally you have girls events followed by boys events.  This meet will now have mixed events with boys and girls in the same event and heats.  The timelines, psych sheet and updated meet invitation have been posted to the meet event page.  The heat sheet will be posted to the WST event page on Thursday so you can print at home and bring to the meet.

WST Secretary, Officials Chair

Twice a year the governing body of Virginia Swimming meet in the Richmond area.  Kelly Warnagiris attended the meeting representing WST.  Each team has 4 delegates = Coach Tag Grove, Coach Trey Shafer, Kelly Warnagiris and Stephanie Miller (Athlete Representative)

USA Swimming recently streamlined their BOD format and sent each LSC a required board organization template.  Virginia Swimming adapted the new format and held elections for the board officials following the new format which took their total number of members from 22 to 15.  Most of the operational work will be completed by committees.

2019 - 2020 Virginia Swimming Budget = $1,008,050

7000 Athletes projected including 700 Flex registrations.

Fees to VA Swimming will not be raised.  Fees to USA Swimming go up $2.

*Swimmer reimbursements will follow a tiered program and include TYR Pro series meets, NCSA, Futures, Jr. Nationals, Olympic Trials etc.  Reimbursement policy will be posted to VSI website with an application form and qualifying meets.

*VA Swimming is starting a Hall of Fame.  They are currently accepting applications.  Minimum of 2 recommendations per nominee.  At the September meeting they will announce candidates (swimmers, coaches and officials)

*There was a change this year in Athlete Protection Certification, the new cert will be good for 12 months from the day you pass the online class (1 hour).  Since it currently valid thru December, Mary Turner recommends completing the new class in early December.  Please be aware that you MUST take the survey at the end of the class in order for OTS to update that you completed the class.

*All Non-Athletes are now “reporters” of child abuse cases and must contact local authorities.

*Concussion Training is not mandatory by VA State Law but VSI highly recommends coaches and officials to take the class and send certificate to VSI who will enter into OTS.  Class can be found online at CDC or High School Swim League.  No expiration date currently.

*VSI signed an agreement with bag tags for on deck credentials, we can get a discount if we go through them for our orders.

*VSI was ranked 5th in the nation for the new FLEX Registration mostly used for learn-to-swim programs.  This helps clubs eliminate an extra insurance policy (18 and over) where now 16/17 coaches can be covered under the FLEX policies.  Save clubs money.

*All meet directors are required to attend a workshop.  Currently offered in April/September.  An online or video conference class will be available in the future.

*USA Swimming requires new By Laws Template for all LSC’s making it more streamlined with a separate Policies and Procedures.

*House of Delegates voted on changes to VSI By Laws and Policies and Procedures.  They cleaned up the language to be more straight forward to match USA Swimming template.

*Thinking about increasing the maximum number of events per swimmers for Senior Championships.

*Possible requirement for minimum number of officials for each meet secured by the host team.  Specifically, dry deck, referees and starters.

*3 additional pre and post meet forms required from safety committee for each meet including facility walk through forms.

*Recommendation was made to cover hotel cost for Age Group and Senior Champs Meet Referee from meet operation budget.

*There was a 10% increase in reported concussions this year.  Trying to get out more information and education.

*Future coaches’ elections will be done electronically.

*Athlete rep Sarah announced that 170 VSI swimmers participated in the online voting.  Jack McCann was elected the new VSI Athlete Representative.  Each team needs to make sure all athletes register for 2020 election.  They also highly recommend that each teams Athlete rep maintain an Instagram account to communicate with team swimmers.
