In 2003, the St. Croix Dolphins Swim Team initiated a program to teach local public-schools students in the third grade how to swim for free as part of their physical education curriculum. With over 30,000 reported deaths monthly around the world, the lack of water safety education has propelled drowning worldwide. Did you know that research shows that 64% of African American children, 45% of Hispanic/Latino, and 40% of Caucasian children have little to no swimming ability? Did you know 79% of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have little to no swimming ability? Drowning is still one of the most common causes of accidental death in children 14 years and younger. The simple fact that we live on an island bears the necessity to educate our community about water safety. It is extremely important to teach a child how to swim, not only because it's fun and for health benefits, but because it could save a child's life.

Scholarships are used to help families in need that can’t afford to send their children to swim lessons.

Swimming with the Dolphins is not just about learning the four strokes and swimming them fast; it’s about discipline, goal setting, hard work, teamwork, and having a healthy body and mind.  It is a life saving skill and a sport that teaches many life lessons; a sport that can make a huge difference in the children of our community.

Thank you for your consideration to support a very worthwhile and vital program for our community.

Together, we can come closer to the goal of “Every Child a Swimmer!”
