Mako Aquatics Closes Out the 2021 Long Course Season

The 2021 Summer Championship Season concluded with 4 Championship Meets (Age Group State, Senior State, USA Summer Championships and NCSA Summer Championships).

 The weekend of July 22-25fFive (5) Mako Aquatics swimmers traveled to Rochester, MN to compete in the 2021 MN 14&U State Championships where as a group they raced to 81% best times, all scoring individually, a 14th place team finish (out of 37 teams) and Nate Caswell won the 11-12 Boys High Point with 5 Individual State Championships and 1 Runner up.

Notable swims included Nate Caswell’s new team records in the 50 back and 400 IM (narrowly missing the MN State record by .24) and Sherman Holmstadt’s new Zone cut in the 200 back, Ethan Finch’s 6% time drop in the 50 free, Dane Dow’s 400 IM new 13-14 AA time and Emmett Matter’s first State Championship event where he placed 13th in the 50 free.

The following weekend (July 29-August 1) 14 of our Junior & Senior Elite swimmers competed in the 2021 MN Senior State Championships at the University of Minnesota’s Jean Freeman Aquatic Center (most who were competing in their 2nd championship meet of the season). The team placed 13th in the overall team standings, 10th for men and 16th for women.

Notable swims included top 8 finishes from Steven Asmus 400 IM (6th) and 200 fly (4th); Andrew Hanson State Champion in 800 free, 200 free (3rd), 1500 (4th), 50 free (5th); Rhian Neitzel 400 IM (4th), 200 breast (6th), 200 IM (8th). The following Team Records were broken: 15-16 Girls Rhian Neitzel 200 Breast; 17-18 Hannah Zurn 200 fly; 15-16 Boys Andrew Hanson 200/400/800 free; 17-18 Boys Theo Johansen 200/400/800/1500 free; 19&0 Boys Steven Asmus 50/200 free, 50/200 back, 100/200 fly, 400 IM.

August 1st Ellery Ottem and Coach Bob headed to Irvine, CA for the USA Swimming Summer Championships (the combined Junior and US Open Meet) August 3-7, 2021 where Ellery swam the 50/100/200 free and 100 fly placing 19th in the 50 free, 21st in the 100 free, and 14th in the 200 free (personal best and new team record).  

The week of August 10-14 5 National Team Boys and Coach Jen travelled to Huntsville, AL for the 2021 NCSA Summer Championships where they finished 20th (the highest a Mako Aquatics team has placed at an NCSA meet) in the Men’s Team Standings with each of the 5 boys contributing points either individually or as part of a relay. Notable swims included a nearly 7% time drop for Jonathan Bennett in the 100 fly and 6% in the 50 back; top 16 finishes for Andrew Hanson in the 50 free (11th), 1500 free (14th), 800 free (15th), 100 free (16th) and the 200 and 400 Free Relay teams of A. Hanson, Theo Johansen, Luis Flores and Jonathan Bennett setting new team records. Congratulations to all of our swimmers on terrific meets and an outstanding Long Course Season. We can’t wait to see what you can accomplish in the 2021-22 Short Course Season which starts September 8th.
