MICHAEL BRUDZINSKI
Head Coach, EMAIL

I have been with RFSC since September of 2008, I was an assistant coach until May of 2011 when I became the Head Coach. Before that I was an assistant coach with OMNI swim club from 2004-2008. I have been involved with swimming since 2002; I swam for Tartan High School in Oakdale MN from 2002-2005, during which time I also swam/coached for OMNI swim club. In 2005, I began my undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and graduated with a degree in Mathematics with a double minor in History and Military Science. During my time at UWRF I swam all four years. I have been a serving member of the Army since 2006, and accepted my Commission as an Officer in July of 2009. I have been with various Engineer units throughout the state, and have deployed to Afghanistan (2012-2013) and Iraq (2016) over my career. Currently I am the Company Commander of the 273rd Engineer Company in Medford, WI. I have a beautiful wife, Caitlin, who I married in May 2015. I have two adorable daughters, Amelia and Bria, who I am sure you will see on the pool deck on several occasions throughout the season!

MARISSA METZLER
Assistant Head Coach

I’ve been with RFSC since 2008- first as a swimmer, and now as a coach! My swimming career started with lessons at four years old, and I’ve been in & around the pool ever since. If I had to pick just one, my favorite event would have to be the 200 IM, but I liked swimming almost every event I tried. I am currently a student at UW-RF, majoring in biomedical science & animal science. When I’m not on deck, I enjoy riding my horses and reading.

PETER JOHNSTON
Assistant Coach

I started coaching with RFSC in April 2019 . I have been involved in swimming since I was 6 years old. Started at a local swim summer club in Madison, WI. I joined my high school swim team, James Madison Memorial, in 2003 as a freshman and swam all 4 years. Right out of high school I coached two seasons for my summer swim team. After graduating high school I went to UW-Stout where I ran collegiality and achieved All American honors my senior season of cross country. I graduated in 2014, with a degree in Business Administration with emphasis in Military Science and a minor in Coaching. I also commissioned as an Officer in the WI National Guard. In 2016, I decided to go back to school for another bachelor's, Health and Wellness. My love for swimming never dwindled so while in school I decided to help out the Menomonie High School Boys swim team for two seasons. After graduating this past December, I accepted a job at UW-River Falls which brought me to RFSC!

SAM TROYER
Assistant Coach

I have been swimming since 2008 and I absolutely fell in love with the sport! My best events are the 500 Free and the 200 Free, but my favorite events are the open mile and the 1000 Free! I am currently a high school student and hoping to get a scholarship to swim for a college! I don’t get very much free time, but when I do I love listening to music and watching movies! I met some of my best friends in swimming, and that is why I continue in this sport! When I am in the water I just let all my problems go and swim, it is like my escape! I also encourage my younger swimmers to try new things and try their hardest!

CONNOR BAAR
In-Water Assistant Coach

My love of swimming began in my Aunt's pool in Somerset when I was 6 months old. We spent every summer in the pool or lake, and asked my parents if swimming was a sport in school. At the time, we were in  a school district without a pool, which proved to be a challenge. I started swimming competitively with River Falls Swim Club in September 2015 and found myself enjoying the sport ever since. Two years later, I convinced my parents to move to River Falls, so I could continue to swim not just for the club, but for the River Falls Varsity team as well. I swim mainly distance swims and went to state both freshman and sophomore year. My best events are the 200 and 500 freestyle. I enjoy making myself available to help out with the River Falls Swim Club and found coaching a good way to do exactly that. I have learned many things from the club (especially revolving around coaching) and experience something new every day. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music and spending time with friends and family, and trying to make people laugh.

ANIKA COLEMAN
In-Water Assistant Coach

I started swimming at River Falls Swim Club in 2013. Since then, I have fallen in love with this club, and my experiences here have taught me so much. I am excited to pass on some of that experience to the newer swimmers.  I am a breaststroker, and my favorite events are the 100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke, and 500 Freestyle.  I am currently in high school. When I am not at the pool or in school, I love spending time with my friends and participating in debate and speech.

BRENDA DERKS
Team Admin; Email, 715-559-7680

My responsibilities include many of the functions of the club outside of coaching. This allows our coaching staff to focus on improving your swimmer’s skills. I have been a parent of swimmers in the club since about 2004. I have spent a lot of time learning the ins and outs of this organization since we have joined and was happy to become the Team Administrator in October 2015.
Feel free to email me with questions or concerns - that is the best form of contact for me. I will also be available in the pool office during many of the swim practices if you would like to talk directly.
