Coaching Staff
Ethan Sellers Head Coach & Masters Coach

I began coaching with SWMKE during the fall of 2019. Prior to becoming the Head Coach at SWMKE, I coached professionally at 2 other US Swimming clubs in both Wisconsin and Minnesota.

My swimming experience includes 18 years (and counting) of competitive swimming, starting when I was 9 years old. I have swam for programs in Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin and competed at countless competitions of all levels. I now train and compete occasionally in US Masters competitions.

I am going into my 5th year of coaching competitive swimming. My coaching philosophies have helped take form through my personal experiences swimming, and mentorship from some great coaches in the Midwest. Our program constantly is training a healthy dose of all 4 strokes. I believe in developing well-rounded swimmers, capable of swimming any race well when presented the opportunity. Our coaching staff is constantly working to improve technique of our swimmers from our Senior group down to our Pre-Competitive Class. Our club has a heavy focus on the 200 and 400 IM, and our training compliments middle distance and distance swimmers.

In my free time I enjoy swimming, biking, and spending time with my three dogs: Ruby, McKinley and Sia. In the summers I enjoy open-water swimming in Lake Michigan, and go hiking in various places throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota. Although I live in Wisconsin, I am a big Vikings and Twins fan, and spend as much time watching the games as possible.

Mattea Wabeke Age Group Coach
Mattea (Matty) grew up in Colorado and swam competitively at Loveland Swim Club for 14 years before swimming at Saint Louis University.

She was a member of the Colorado All-Star team. In high school, she was a 4 year varsity swimmer for CHSAA and was an All-Area team member. Her high school team won 2 state titles and 4 conference titles during her high school career. She was on 5 conference relays and 3 state relays that won champion titles - one state relay that broke a state record. Individually, she was a conference champion in the 100 Back and two-time champion in the 200 IM. Throughout her high school career, she was a two-time All American in 2012 and 2013.

In college, she swam on scholarship at Saint Louis University and also received the Get in the Game Scholarship for a Female Athlete in Business. Her freshman year, she was named A-10 Rookie of the Week and specialized in backstroke, IM and mid-distance.

Mattea coached her middle school team all 4 years she was in high school, and enjoyed it so much that she decided to pursue club coaching with SWMKE. After receiving a BS in Entrepreneurship, she moved to Chicagoland to pursue her photography and advertising businesses full-time. She moved to Milwaukee in Fall of 2020 to pursue community and business and is excited to work with the SWMKE team!

In her free time, she likes to go bowling with friends, try new restaurants, travel, paint/draw, and check out art galleries.
Kristen Schmalfeldt Novice Coach

I have been involved in aquatics in some capacity for my entire life. I began swimming competitively at the age of 6, eventually joining varsity swimming at Greenfield High School. I was even fortunate to have the opportunity to serve as team captain during my senior year!

My sister’s love for aquatics inspired me to become a lifeguard and water safety instructor through Greenfield Parks and Recreation, which started my aquatics career. I have now been teaching and coordinating swim programs to Milwaukee’s youth for over 10 years.

I graduated from UW-La Crosse in 2017 with a degree in Recreation Therapy. In addition to coaching for SWMKE, I am an aquatics director for an intergenerational care facility.

In my free time, I enjoy going to concerts, reading, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

I am excited to join the coaching staff at SWMKE and make a positive impact on young swimmers!
