Winter Classic

Things are coming together quickly for the Winter Classic.  I wanted to give a bit of a progress report on things:

  • There are 495 athletes signed up for this year’s Classic.  That’s actually down from 2019, when we were an even 600.  But, we turned away a few teams to keep numbers more manageable for this year.  Still though, 495 athletes over 2.5 days is a LOT of racing.
  • We’ve also made finals a bit smaller and quicker to keep the number of bodies on the deck lower
  • The meet committee has been working hard to coordinate volunteers, organize meals, recruit officials---there are a LOT of behind-the-scenes hours going on.
  • A rough outline of the competition schedule can be found on the event page.  Sessions may end a few minutes before the scheduled time if all goes well, but session start times are pretty much locked in place
  • I wanted to touch a bit on admissions.  I was not comfortable with the idea of nearly 300 people jamming the pool area for each session, so we’ve gone a bit outside the box and set up a ticket purchase system for those that want to watch inside the pool area.  Two hundred tickets will be sold for each session (except for Friday’s distance and Sunday’s 500FR session, both of which are free).  They’ll be first come, first served among all the teams, with ticket sales opening Tuesday at 9am for all sessions but Saturday finals (Sat finals will open at 2pm on Saturday).  The system is set up so that an account can buy up to 2 tickets, no more.  This won’t affect our families that much, as most families will be working volunteer duties during the meet.  But, once 200 tickets are sold for any particular session, no other tickets will be available.  All tickets will be sold in advance via Ticket Spicket for $6.  That will include a wristband and heat sheet for the session. We believe this will keep a safe, spread out, yet still exciting atmosphere for the meet.  We plan to run our livestream in the high school commons for all those who wish to spread out a bit more, and that’s absolutely free.  We’re also trying to secure Saturday evening at The Card Table and have them stream finals so families can watch while they have dinner!
  • Heat sheets, session reports, and psych sheets will come out early next week

Mile Day

Between Christmas and New Year’s each day is a fun little holiday we call “Mile Day.”  It’s where boys and girls of all ages swim the 1650 freestyle.  This year is no different, with Mile Day taking place Wednesday, December 29th.  This year, however, we’ve made a small adaptation.  The meet, which is open to all swimmers except our developing Thunderstorm swimmers, now has some options to choose from.  Anyone racing can swim the 1650 freestyle, all 66 lengths.  OR, if they’re 10&U they have the opportunity to swim the 500 if they’re nervous about the big distance.  11-12s are the same, but with the 1000 free as a backup.  And it goes without sayin, we will have opportunities for our Masters swimmers and curious parents to race against themselves and the clock.  There’s no cost to the meet, only just some hard work followed by the strong sensation of accomplishment (and vomit).  This year, Waunakee Wave is scheduled to join us as well.

Christmas Break Schedule

With the holidays comes some crazy practice availability at our facilities—we still have 4 days in question, from Dec 27-30.

Clintonville Meet

During the summer/fall, when the sun was still up past 5pm and COVID numbers were at an all-time low, we added a team travel event for our 12&U swimmers to Clintonville, WI for their one day swim meet.  The plan was to have a special event planned where our swimmers would travel together, race together in the morning session, grab a quick lunch, and head back home—all in one morning on Saturday, January 22nd.  In typical fashion, a lot has changed since then.  Both in terms of COVID numbers, but also in terms of vaccination rates for 12&U swimmers.  As coaches, we feel we can pull the meet off successfully and safely, but we want to gauge the interest of our 12&U families before getting too in the weeds in planning.  If you have a 12&U swimmer, take 1 minute to fill out this quick survey about the Clintonville meet.  Even if you have zero urge in going, please let us know exactly that.

Remainder Competition Schedule

The remainder of the season’s meets are planned out, with all but Jan 30th & beyond eligible to be signed up for.  Here’s a quick synopsis:

Regionals

This year, we are co-hosting a Wisconsin Swimming Regional Championship meet with McFarland.  This is a HUGE deal, both from a prestige standpoint, a financial standpoint, and responsibility standpoint.  There’s a lot of work to go into it, but we’ll be able to split it with the McFarland Spartan Sharks.  We will absolutely need the help of all of our families to make this meet *go*, so if possible please make yourself available to compete and help in McFarland the weekend of Feb 18-20.  This is the culminating event of the season for the vast majority of our swimmers, and we’d like to make it something special for them.

One OTHER Swim Meet

On the calendar for January 15th is one other swim meet we’ll all be spectators for…

The currently undefeated UW Badgers will host Minnesota & Michigan in what promises to be a really exciting meet at their fancy new pool.  The event starts at 11am.  This is a great opportunity to see some of the best racing around and will really inspire your swimmer.
