Jenna Purkey Email

Head Coach

Jenna started her swimming career in El Paso under Coach Flato. She recently celebrated her 10th Annivesary at the COM having came to COM as the Head Age Group Coach in August 2011. She coaches Select and helps with age groups and developmental groups throughout the season. Before joining COM, she was the head coach of Abilene Tidal Wave for 5 yrs. During her time as a coach, Jenna has helped athletes of all ages reach TAGS, Sectionals, and Junior Nationals. Jenna was also the Head Swim and Dive Coach for Wylie High School during the 2010-2011 school year. At Wylie, she had a state finalist in both swimming and diving. Jenna is also a level 3 ASCA Coach.  She likes to encourage her swimmers by reminding them to, "control what you can control and be the best teammate you can be."

Jenna grew up swimming and performed very well through her high school years as an All State, High School State Qualifier and TAGS.

Jenna has been married to Jonathan Purkey since 2006 and has two sons- Jason Dean and Josiah David. They live in Midland with their two labradoodles--Daisy and Lizzie. Jenna has also played acoustic guitar on two different albums. 

Mike Anzano Email

Assistant Head Coach: Select & Dev 2 11+

"If you want to swim fast at meets, you have to swim fast at pratice."
Mike has been an asset to the COM swim team for nine years and coaches our Developmental 2 group for 11 and olders. Mike loves the community that comes with swimming. Mike encourages his swimmers by reminding them to "[always] listen, be kind and take ownership of yourself."
Prior to his coaching career, Mike also swam for 4 years at Parkland High in his hometown of El Paso, TX. He was a 4A State qualifier in 2008 and 2009, which was the first from his school. In club swimming, he was a Sectional level swimmer for the Desert Shark Swim Club. He continued his swimming career into college as a member of the Falcon Swim Team while attending UTPB. During his 4 years with the Falcons, he received All-Conference academic honors and had the highest GPA on the men's swim team in 2012.
Mike graduated from UTPB with a degree in Math in 2013.  He is now married to Aubrei Anzano and they live in Midland with their two children, Sarah and Isaiah. They have one dog named Leia Organa Anzano. He enjoys working out and playing disc golf on his free time.

Coach Luke joined COM coaching staff after coaching for Odessa Aquatic Club for nine years. He is rounding off his third year at the COM and has proven to be a quality asset to the entire team. Luke is a Pecos, Texas native where he swam for Pecos Aquatic Club and Pecos High School. While swimming, Luke was apart of District and Regional Champs for four years, and All District and All Region in several events.  Coach Luke strives to inspire young athletes to overcome adveristy through hardwork, discipline, and perseverence. Coach Luke likes to encourage his athletes by reminding them to, "take what you've learned here and build on it with what you will learn there." Luke is so passionate about swimming because he enjoys being able to help athletes fall in love with a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime. 
Coach Luke went on to graduate from The University of Texas of The Permian Basin with a Bachelors of Arts in History with a minor in Kinesiology. He comes from a family of pastors and finds the most joy when he can be with his family and involved in all sorts of church activities ad events. You can find Luke spending time with friends and family or doing things around the house with his free time. 
Steve Flato Email
Coach: Senior Gold
"Elevate your mind to elevate your game."
Coach Flato has been involved in the sport of swimming since 1968.  He grew up swimming in El Paso for the El Paso YMCA, which later became El Paso Aqua Posse.  Coach Flato experienced many successes as a swimmer, ranging from high school state qualifier to being a member of the NAIA National Championship winning team at Drury University in 1981.  In college he was the Collegiate All American. Flato loves to coach swimming because he gets to watch the growth in his swimmers.  He likes to encourage his swimmers by reminding them to, "Enjoy the companionship and team atmosphere."
Flato has been a teacher of Phsyical Education for over 30 years and has been selected as the Who's Who Among American Teachers four times.  He is an inductee to the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame and has coached 63 All State First Team athletes.  
Coach Flato married his wife Veronica in August of 2017. They are both from El Paso. He proposed to his wife on the FMH deck using the scoreboard. He has three siblings who also swam through college. In his spare time, you can find Flato playing guitar, mountain biking and jet skiing.
Andy Laegeler Email
Coach: Junior 1/ Presenior 1
Andy has been coaching at the COM since 2018.  He grew up in Decatur, IL, playing competitive golf, attending the Missouri University of Science & Technology on a golf scholarship.  After his undergraduate, he studied pharmacy at the University of Houston and is currently a pharmacist at Midland Memorial Hospital.  Andy found his way to the COM after moving to Midland and fell in love with the staff and facilities at COM. He  developed a passion for teaching swimming to kids while living overseas in Indonesia for his wife’s job with Chevron, where he coached the swim team.   Andy believes that swimming is a lifelong skill that can never be perfected, but always improved and continues with growth. He likes to encourage his athletes by reminding them that, "long bodies are fast bodies," and "take advantage of every second and enjoy the journey." He enjoys seeing other achieve their goals. 
Andy is a triathlete and has now completed five Ironmans, and numerous sprints, Olympic and 70.3 events as well.  He is an Ironman Certified Coach, sharing his love for the sport by teaching others how to swim, bike and run.    You can find Andy spending time with his family, golfing, reading, playing piano and particiating in triathlons  His two boys, Jacob and Zach, compete on the COM swim team
Sara Welch Email

Coach: Splash & Morning Masters

"You've got gifts!!!"

Sara is one of our greatest veterans at the COM, she has been coaching with us since 1985 when she was scooped up by our Director Brad--then Coach. Her swimming career started in 1972-1979 and to this day she loves how the sport makes her feel. Sara is passionate about swimming because of the lifelong comrades she has made, the joy through movement and the lifelong benefits. She likes to encourage her swimmers by reminding them, "Use what you are given to the best of your abilities and be a great teammate along the way."

Sara graduated from UT Austin with Honors. She was one of eight children, and great faith and love carried them through everything. Some of her greatest accomplishments include: being married to her amazing husband, Pat, and having three terrific kids, Elaine, Diana and Luke. Her family continues to grow and now has a granddaughter named Madeline. In Coach Elaine's free time, you may find her baking, reading, embroidering, diamond painting or napping!

Blair Corbett Email

Coach: Junior 3 & Pre-Senior 3

"There are no rewards in life without sacrifice. The bigger the sacrifice, the higher the achievement." 

Coach Blair has been coaching at the COM since 2019 after deciding to volunteering.  He started his swimming career in Canada where he swam for thirteen years as an age group athlete with the Kisu Swim Club (Penticton, B.C., Canada). He still competes to this day after 32 years in the sport. He loves the sport because it is a lifelong sport with no age limit and continually promotes a healthy and positive lifestyle. He belives a sport this tough builds a lot of character; it takes a lot of time, focus and commitment. He likes to encourage his swimmers by reminding them, "Don't forget the habits you learned at the COM. They will help you achieve your maximum potential in everything that you do."

Accomplishments achieved by Coach Blair while swimming include: Team male MVP for swimming in 2002; Canadian Junior National qualifying times in the 100 and 200 Breastroke and in the 200 and 400 Individual Medleys. He also graduated High Honors from Montana Technical University in 2011 with a Ba.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering. He was also the 2007 Male MVP for SAIT Trojans Cross Country Running Team (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology).

Blair married his college sweetheart (Laura Wellman) and they have two boys. His son Nolan is six and competes on the COM dive team while his son Landon is 4 and is on the Swim and Gym program at COM. During his free time, you can find Blair swimming, running and mountian biking. He also enjoys skiing and playing hockey.

Julia Worthy Email

Coach: Junior 1 & 3, Pre-Senior 1 & 3, Developmental 1

"Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong."

Julia has been coaching at the COM since 2018 after joining an internship through Midland College. Her swimming career began as a swimmer for Lubbock Swim Club, where she swam for eight years. Julia loves swimming because all the hardwork put into it pays off and you have fun while doing it! Julia encourages her swimmers by reminding them, "There is nothing standing in your way of greatness, so show yourself how great you want to be."  What makes Julia so passionate about swimming is seeing the swimmers show up day after day, giving their best efforts, even if it means there will be sacrifice.

Julia's family is small and sweet, inlcuding her Aunt Tina, Uncle Jeff and her little brother Andrew. She also has a fifteen year old Jack Russell Terrior named Piper who lives with her. In her spare time, you will find Julia studying for her next test or trying out any new viral TikTok craft.

Tyler Smits Email

Coach: Developmental 1 & 2

"Try your best and work your hardest, so you never live life with any regrets."

Tyler joined our coaching staff in 2019 after swimming for fourteen years at Pfast, Nitro, Txla, ATAC and UTPB.  Accomplishments while swimming included 2nd Team for UTPB Conference and Athlete Scholar for three years at conference.  Tyler's favorite thing about swimming is seeing other swimmers' passion for the sport; it was the first and only sport he genuinely enjoyed.  He likes to encourage his swimmers by reminding them, "Make sure to keep your passion, even during bad meets, because we can't always be on the top of our game." 

Tyler has one sister along with his parents who he says can all easily spark great conversations. Some of his greatest accmomplishments in life are climbing Guadalupe Peak and graduating high school and college with GPAs higher than 3.25.  Tyler enjoys hiking, paddleboarding and video games in his free time. 

Elaine Connell Coaching Staff

"The strongest people aren't always the people who win, but who don't give up when they lose."

Coach Elaine, who goes by Lanie, has been coaching at the COM since 2020, but she has long been apart of the COM family. She started swimming when she was 11 and swam through elementary and high school.  Whilst being an elementary Fine Arts teacher, she deisred to be in the swim world, and she found herself the perfect spot with the Splash Team.  Lanie loves that swimming can be a sport for all ages, body types and fitness levels. She enjoyed swimming while pregnant with her daughter. She likes to encourage her athletes by reminding them, "It's important to go back to the basics and remind yourself why you fell in love with the sport in the first place. Sometimes we can get so caught up in ourselves that we can forget what brought us to where we are now."  She is so passionate about swimming because of the atmosphere that can only be found by the pool. When she isn't there, she craves it; when she's having a bad day, some pool time can make it better!

Some of Lanie's greatest accomplishments include: Bachelor of Music with a Teaching Certificate, Master of Arts in Music with an Emphasis in Woodwind Pedagogy, four-time Honor Recital performer, Who’s Who in America’s Universities and Colleges, Drum Major for the WTAMU marching band in 2012, WTAMU Band Ernest Howry Spirit Award, Completed the Tall City Triathlon in July of 2017, and-- of course-- becoming a mom!

Lanie and her husband, Cameron, have been married for four years and have a one year old daughter, Madeleine. Cameron is a band director for MISD. They have a four year old black lab/boxer mix, Piper. In her spare time, you can find Lanie working on Calligraphy, painting, reading, listening to band and orchestra music and creating digital art.

Legend Jankowski

Coach: Senior Black

Legend joined the COM coaching staff in 2019. He started his swimming career while living in Las Vegas, Nevada and continued it at the COM after moving to Midland. He has been swimming for twelve years and will continue his career at UTPB under Coach Betsy Graham. Go Falcons!  Legend loves the competition and friendly environment that comes with swimming and likes to encourage his swimmers by reminding them, "Don't let whatever happened here stop you from who you want to be." Some of Legend's greatest accomplishments include: Swimmer of the Year, MVP, Most Dedicated Swimmer and our very own COM Award. He has also won the state title for the 100 and 200 backstroke.

Legend has three brothers, three sisters who are all just as competitive as Legend. They also own a dog business. In his spare time, Legend likes to play frisbee golf and basketball.  

Michael Mangan Coach
Kaitlin Geric Coaching Staff

Assistant Coach: Developmental 2

"I know you can do this, now go prove it to yourself."

Kaitlin has been coaching for nine months; she coaches our Developmental 2 groups. Kaitlin started her swimming career at the Norwin Aqua Club in Pennsylvania, and made her way to swim at the COM. She later developed a passion for coaching and a desire to share the sport with younger athletes. She enjoys seeing her swimmers become better athletes and teammates through the sport and pushing themselves physically. 

Kaitlin enjoys reading, eating and attending school. She is currently a member of the National Honors Society and PALs. She has a younger sister involved with the COM Dive team, a mother who is extremely active with the COM and a father who has always encouraged her and pushed her to do the very best she can. 

Raymond Martinez Coaching Staff

Coach: Developmental 2 10&Unders

Raymond joined our coaching staff in August of 2021. He was volunteering with the team for a year and a half before coming on to coach. He started his swimming career through our COM swim lessons and joined the swim team at the age of seven and has been swimming ever since. Raymond is currently on our Select team. At the age of twelve, Raymond was on the TAGS team; Sectionals Team; and Junior Nationals Team. He enjoys that swimming is a goal oriented sport catered to each individuals' own focus and desires. Raymond likes to encourage his athletes by reminding them to, "Continue to work hard, but don't forget to have fun while you're at it."

Raymond is also a blackbelt in Tae-Kwon-Do.

Monique Rangel Email

Swim Team Administrator

Monique found herself at the COM with her first child in Swim & Gym. Longtime friend, Coach Jenna, recruited her for a part-time admin position and Monique has not looked back. She handles all travel arrngements and plannng for the swim team. She has grown to appreciate and the love the sport after attending multiple swim meets, volunteering in Meet Operations and building relationships with the athletes. She even began to practice swimming to understand the sport in its entirety and has developed a passion for watching the kids reach their goals. She hopes to be able to compete with the kids on one of their Friday races!

Monique has a degree in Social Work from UTPB and Psychology from Midland College. She has worked for Communities in Schools and interned at the Children's Advocacy Center. She has been married to her husband, Abraham, since 2013. They have three children, Chrissy (6), Eva (4) and Gideon (1). Some of her greatest accomplishments include: graduating with Magnum Cum Laude Honors, ripping up all the carpet in her house and laying new floor on her own, being able to carry two carseats at once while holding two babies on her body. 

Monique enjoys traveling the world with her husband, Switzerland being their favorite place so far. She also enjoys paddleboarding, binge watching Netflix and baking plant based desserts.

Alli has been apart of the swim team family since 2017. She is a graduate of Texas Tech University. Her husband, Andrew, and her pastor together at Mid-Cities Neely Church. They have two beautiful daughters, Andie Jane and Anna Claire. They have a sweet dog-baby named Henry.

"Trust the Process."

Jaime has been a COM swim parent since 2017 and has been one of three admins for the swim team. She has daughters on both the swim team and the dive team.  She loves swimming for the lifelong lessons taught and friends both parents and swimmers make. She can see the change that swimming has done in the lives of her daughters, both as athletes and individuals. 

Jaime has been married to her husband, James, for 19 years and has two daughters, Kristin and Kaitlin. They have two dogs and two horses.
