COM Group Descriptions

Discovery

Discovery is the introductary group for the COM swim team.  This group has two, half hour practice sessions per week.  Their primary focus is learning the appropriate practice skills, vocabulary, procedures and to build up kicking endurance.  This group is critical for an athletes success in the Splash or Developmental groups.  Discovery is only for one month.  After one month, athletes automatically transition into Splash if they are 5-6, Developmental 1 10&Under for 7-10 year olds and Developmental 2 11+ for 11 and overs. 

Splash

Splash is the 5-6 year old group of COM swim team.  This group has two, one hour practice sessions per week.  Their primary focus is developing skills and stroke technique necessary for success in competitive swimming.  Swimmers are expected to participate in Mini-Prix Meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet.

In order to be considered for a spot in the Splash group, a swimmer must achieve the following three criteria:

  1. Swim 25 yards of freestyle without stopping

  2. Swim 25 yards of backstroke without stopping

  3. Tread water for 1:00 without stopping

Developmental 1

Developmental 1 has two, one hour practice sessions per week.  Practice groups are based on swimmers ages.  Their primary focus is developing skills and stroke technique necessary for success in competitive swimming.  Swimmers are expected to participate in Mini-Prix meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the developmental 1 group, a swimmer must achieve the following three criteria:

  1. Swim 25 yards of freestyle without stopping

  2. Swim 25 yards of backstroke without stopping

  3. Tread water for 1:00 without stopping

Developmental 2

Developmental 2 has two or three, one hour practice sessions per week.  Practice groups are based on swimmers ages.  Their primary focus is developing skills and stroke technique necessary for success in competitive swimming.  Swimmers are expected to participate in Mini-Prix meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet

In order to be considered for a spot in the Developmental 2 group, coaches will be evaluating the following skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 8 x 25 on :40

  2. Kick 8 x 25 on :50

  3. Demonstrate consistent, correct technique in freestyle and backstroke during practice and meets. 

  4. Swim 200 yards continuosly 

Dolphin 1

Dolphin 1 is for 10 and under swimmers that have passed the developmental groups' requirements.  This group has three, one and a half hour practice sessions per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work.  Swimmers are expected to participate in their scheduled meets throughout the year and in their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Dolphin 1 group, coaches will be evaluating the following performance, technical skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 6 x 50 on 1:20

  2. Kick 6 x 50 on 1:30

  3. Demonstrate consistent, correct technique in butterfly and breaststroke during practice and meets. 

  4. Be able to legally complete a 200 Free and a 200 IM

  5. Have achieved 3 Qualifying times for Syntal Winter Invitational (SCY) or Frost Bank Invitational (LCM)

Dolphin 2

Dolphin 2 is the top training group for 10 and under swimmers.  This group has five, one and a half hour practice sessions per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work.  Swimmers are expected to participate in their scheduled meets throughout the year and their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Dolphin 1 group, coaches will be evaluating the following performance, technical skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 6x100 on 2:15

  2. Kick 6x100 on 2:45

  3. Have achieved at least 3 “B” times

  4. Be able to complete a 500 Free

Junior 1

Junior 1 is for 11-12 year olds that have passed the Developmental teams' requirements.  This group has four, two hour practice sessions per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work.  Swimmers are expected to participate in meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Junior 1 group, coaches will be evaluating the following performance, technical skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 8 x 50 on 1:10

  2. Kick 8 x 50 on 1:20

  3. Demonstrate consistent, correct technique in butterfly and breaststroke during practice and meets. 

  4. Be able to complete a 200 Free and 200 IM if moving from Developmental 2, or a 500 Free and 200 IM if moving from Dolphin 1

  5. Have achieved 3 Qualifying times for Syntal Winter Invitational (SCY) or Frost Bank Invitational (LCM)

Junior 2

Junior 2 is the intermediate group for 11 and 12 year olds.  This group has six, one and a half to two hour practice sessions per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work. Swimmers are expected to participate in meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Junior 2 group, coaches will be evaluating the following performance, technical skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 6 x 100 on 1:45

  2. Kick 6 x 100 on 2:15

  3. Have achieved at least 3 “B” times

  4. Be able to complete a 1000 Free and a 400 IM

Junior 3

Junior 3 is the top group for 11 and 12 year olds.  This group has seven, one and a half to two hour practice sessions per week that include dry land training, swimming training and technique work. Swimmers are expected to participate in meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Junior 3 group, coaches will be evaluating the following skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 6 x 100 Free on 1:30 and 6 x 100 IM on 1:45

  2. Kick 6 x 100 on 2:00

  3. Have achieved at least 3 “A” times

  4. Competed in all USA Swimming IMX events, the 400 IM and 1650 yards/1500 meters

Pre-Senior 1

Pre-Senior 1 is for 13-14 year olds that have passed the Developmental teams' requirements.  This group has four, two hour practice sessions per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work.  Swimmers are expected to participate in meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

Swimmers in Junior 1 will move into the Pre-Senior 1 group when they are 13 prior to the start of the SC or LC season.

In order to be considered for a spot in the Pre-Senior 1 group, coaches will be evaluating the following performance, technical skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 8 x 50 on 1:10

  2. Kick 8 x 50 on 1:20

  3. Demonstrate consistent, correct technique in butterfly and breaststroke during practice and meets. 

  4. Be able to complete a 200 Free and 200 IM if moving from Developmental 2, or a 500 Free and 200 IM if moving from Dolphin 1

  5. Have achieved 3 Qualifying times for Syntal Winter Invitational (SCY) or Frost Bank Invitational (LCM)

Pre-Senior 2

Pre-Senior 2 is the intermediate 13-14 group.  This group has seven one and a half to two hour practices per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work.  Swimmers are expected to participate in meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Pre-Senior 2 group, a swimmer must achieve the following 3 criteria:

  1. Swim 8x100 on 1:30 

  2. Kick 8x100 on 2:00 

  3. Be able to complete a 1650 Free and 400 IM 

  4. Have achieved at least 3 "B" times

Pre-Senior 3

Pre-Senior 3 is the top13-14 group.  This group has seven to eight one and half to two hour practices per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work.  Swimmers are expected to participate in meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Pre-Senior 3 group, a swimmer must achieve the following 3 criteria:

  1. Swim 6 x 100 Free on 1:20 and 6 x 100 IM on 1:35

  2. Kick 6 x 100 on 1:45

  3. Have achieved at least 3 11-12 year old “A” times

  4. Competed in all USA Swimming IMX events and 1650 yards/1500 meters

Senior Black

Senior Black is for high schoolers that have passed the Developmental teams' requirements.  This group has four to five, two hour practice sessions per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work.  Swimmers are expected to attend miniumum of 3 practices per week.  Swimmers are expected to participate in meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

Swimmers in Pre-Senior 1 will move into the Senior Black group when they enter high school, even if they are still 14 years old. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Senior Black group, coaches will be evaluating the following performance, technical skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 8 x 50 on 1:10

  2. Kick 8 x 50 on 1:20

  3. Demonstrate consistent, correct technique in butterfly and breaststroke during practice and meets. 

  4. Be able to complete a 200 Free and 200 IM if moving from Developmental 2, or a 500 Free and 200 IM if moving from Pre-Senior 1

  5. Have achieved 3 Qualifying times for Syntal Winter Invitational (SCY) or Frost Bank Invitational (LCM)

Senior Gold

Senior Gold is the intermediate group for all high schoolers.  This group has seven, one and a half to two hour practice sessions per week that include dry land training, swim training and technique work.  Swimmers are expected to attend a minimum of 5 practices per week.  Swimmers are expected to participate in meets throughout the year and compete in their championship meet. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Senior Gold group, coaches will be evaluating the following performance, technical skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 8x100 on 1:30 

  2. Kick 8x100 on 2:00 

  3. Be able to complete a 1650 Free and 400 IM 

  4. Have achieved at least 3 15-16 year old "BB" times

Senior Select

The Select group is for high school age athletes striving for the highest level of performance in the sport of swimming.  This group practices seven to nine times per week including morning practices.  Training includes instruction in stroke technique, dry land training, energy system training, and race strategy.  Swimmers are expected compete in all meets on the meet schedule throughout the season, as well as at championship meets assigned by the coaches.  Swimmers are expected to maintain high grades, complete service hours to the team as requested by the coach, be at 7 of 8 practices per week.  This group is the highest level of the COM Swim Team and is expected to be leaders by example in our 7 habits and core values. 

In order to be considered for a spot in the Senior Gold group, coaches will be evaluating the following performance, technical skills and training capabilities:

  1. Swim 8x100 on 1:15 (boys) 1:20 (girls) with :10 rest and 8 meters underwater

  2. Kick 8x100 on 1:45 with :10 rest and 8 meters underwater

  3. Have a USA Swimming 15-16, AA time in 2 or more events

  4. Be a senior in High School

  5. Exemplify the COM habits and core values
