Coaching Staff
Nicholas Hopson Head Coach

I started out swimming in Gillette as part of the swim club and the high school team. Then went on to swim in college at the University of South Dakota.  As a former swimmer myself I  wish to develop a program that is engaging and enjoyable for my swimmers. My coaching philosophy begins with the athlete/swimmer.

One of my goals for my athletes is that they would look back at their time in the sport as a positive experience that helped them grow. I feel strongly that this will also prepare them for what experiences life may bring them in the future.

Julie Schmitt

I have been swimming for as long as I can remember, swimming for Casper Swim Club since age 8, competing as a top Trojan swimmer throughout high school, and going on to be an All-Conference swimmer for St. Cloud State University. What can I say...I love swimming! What I love most about it is the friendships and skill set I’ve gained through my time in the pool.

As a coach I strive to provide my swimmers a fun and positive environment to practice in each day. I am here to help my swimmers grow as young athletes, building strong work ethics and memories that will last a lifetime.

Angelica Vargas Coaching Staff
I have been swimming for 16 years, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and in Irvine, California. My love of swimming started at a young age and has taken me to competitions and the Junior Olympics with the Jr USA swim team. From the age of 9 my coach took me under his wing and trained me little by little about how to be a coach. As I got older I got my certifications to be a swim instructor and while on my high school swim team I began coaching by helping with my team. I furthered my coaching experiences on my college swim team where my coach also taught me different coaching styles.
I combine my various coaching experiences along with my WSI training to be able to coach all kids. I am proud to be able to adjust my coaching style to meet children’s individual differences and to be able to work with children across the age spectrum.
Karl Radke President

Family practice doctor/chief medical officer by day, and swim dad, husband, runner, avid golfer the rest of the time. I volunteered to be the CASC Club President because I knew my past life experiences would benefit the swim club.

Remembering that the club is a parent run organization, I felt the need to do my part. Let us make this swim club something to be proud of now, and in the future.

I will work hard throughout my two year tenure to help the swim club grow and prosper. Remember the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child".  Parents, lets all think about stepping up to participate in our clubs future growth.

If you have any questions about joining, helping out, or are just curious about the club, please feel free to contact me by e-mail at

Mary Mwangi Vice-President

I am a long time Casper resident.  I attended the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN where I played soccer and received a Masters of Arts in Occupational Therapy. I was a private practice Occupational Therapist for 13 years before “retiring” to stay home with my five girls.  We are a homeschooling family and most of my time is dedicated to teaching my kids and running our household. In between our various activities we enjoying spending time together as a family.

My oldest daughter joined swim club about 4 years ago and she was immediately hooked.  Swimming has been a great way to increase her self-confidence and has given her a year-round activity that she loves.  I have been serving as swim club vice president for about a year. I initially started as safety director but stepped in as VP when the position became vacated.  It has been a very educational experience for me as I had no idea all that goes into to running a club and into swimming in general.  I look forward to doing all I can to help the team grow and prosper and encourage anyone interested in volunteering to jump right in.  You won’t regret it!

I have been a part of the swim club since 2013, when my youngest daughter started swimming competitively. I am excited to be a part of the club board and help the the club continue to grow. I feel like the swim club helps children stay engaged, provides a safe environment to grow as swimmers and as young people.

I have been the principal at Casper Classical Academy since the 2002-2003 school year.  Prior to that I taught elementary school math and science in Lubbock, Texas for five years.  My Bachelor's degree is from the University of Wyoming in Elementary Education, and my Master's degree is from Lubbock Christian University in Educational Administration.
I am married and we have two children.  We are huge Broncos fans and enjoy using our season tickets to attend games down in Denver as often as possible!  We have two rescue dogs, a Basset Hound and a poodle-terrier mix, as well as a fluffy cat and a guinea pig.
Our son has been swimming for three years now and this is our daughter's first year.  We are grateful for what the Casper Swim Club provides to our children in the areas of hard work, perseverance, and being able to work on individual growth.  I am happy to help serve on the Casper Swim Club's board as their treasurer and to help the club out as an official.   I serve on a few additional boards: treasurer of my Delta Kappa Gamma chapter and secretary of Casper Five Trails Rotary.

I have been with the Casper Swim Club for almost 8 years and have served the team in many capacities including swim parent, swim coach, club Treasurer, and currently Meet Director.  Participating in club swimming provides multiple benefits for our youth such as structure, exercise and socialization.  It's a great life sport and all are welcome.  The Board of Directors encourage parent volunteerism to help the Casper Swim Club develop and growth.

Rachael Collie Secretary

My family and I moved to Casper in 2014 and we have been part of the Casper Swim Club since that time. I have one daughter in middle school and one in elementary, both of who enjoy training and competing with the club. I am delighted to join the committee in the role of secretary and contribute to the continued growth and stewardship of the club. I believe swimming is a fantastic sport that builds lifelong fitness and character. My accent gives away that I am not a US national and instead come from New Zealand. We came to Casper via a three-year stint in Rochester Minnesota. I have a PhD and Masters in psychology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology. I previously worked as a consultant clinical psychologist and academic psychologist for many years. At present I am enjoying an extended hiatus from the demands and pace of being a dual career family.
