Coach Randi DeLeo

Coaching Experience:  Randi has been coaching with the Tsunamis since the start of the 2017 season. Before taking a break from swimming to start a career and a family, she coached with Manchester Swim Club, and volunteered as an instructor teaching children with disabilities basic water safety and swimming skills. She has also taught independent private lessons for the last 3 years.

Swimming Experience: Randi has been in the water since before she was able to run, and is probably more coordinated in the pool than on land. In kindergarten, she handed her mom a flyer she’d gotten from school, and said that she NEEDED to be on swim team. Her parents agreed, and unknowingly signed up to drive her around the state for the next 15 years of their lives. Randi swam with MSC and later Charter Oak Aquatics. Her strongest events were butterfly, IM, and distance freestyle.

Randi’s Story: I owe a lot of who I am today to the work ethic and responsibility that comes with being a competitive swimmer for most of my life. The early morning practices, the sets we all love/hate, and the constant smell of chlorine on everything you own are things only a swimmer would understand, and more importantly, appreciate. It’s something that I love to share with young swimmers. Growing up in the pool allowed me to learn at a very young age that hard work pays off – what you put in is what you get out. As a parent, I am proud that my daughter has found a love in this sport, too. I know that the lessons from the pool as a youth will translate into positive traits as an adolescent, and hopefully into adulthood, as well.

Coaching Experience: This is Coach Stephen’s fitth year of coaching at the Farmington Valley YMCA, in which he is very passionate about the sport of swimming.  Stephen’s passion for the sport supports the development of a strong program that Coach Mario has built where the swimmers have a better chance at reaching their potential.

Swimming Experience: Stephen started swimming at the age of 5 and swam until age 18 competitively. In high school, Stephen swam on the Varsity swim team for Amity Regional High School, in which in Lettered in, as well as being voted to the All State and All New England teams by the coach’s poll, in which making the team is based on individual event times.  In the off seasons Stephen swam for the Stratford YMCA, the Jewish Community Center, the Paugusset Club for summer league, and the Orange Otters, his home town YMCA.

Stephen was one of the top 6 breast stokers in New England during his junior and senior years at Amity and earned a spot on the roaster to swim at the All Eastern Conference Invitational his senior year in Puerto Ricco. Stephen’s primary events were in short course and were the 50 and 100 breaststroke, as well as the 200 medley relay (third position breaststroke).  Stephen now swim’s one to two miles a day for recreational pleasure.
Stephen’s Story: Stephen loves coaching because it allows him to give back to the community.   Stephen believes that coaching at its very core is about developing judgment and building the character, capabilities, and expertise in the person he is leading or influencing.  Every team and individual cannot maximize their potential and “win” without a coach guiding and influencing improvement and recognizing positive results.  Additionally, Stephen believes that a good coach needs to be both faithful and devoted to the team, as well as the members of the team's coaching family. That type of loyalty is sometimes hard to come by.
