Coaching Staff
Matt Garifo Director of Competitive Swimming

This is Matt’s first year as the Head Coach of the RANY Swim Team, but has over 15 years of coaching experience.  He previously spent the last 8 years as the Head Age Group Coach for the YMCA of Montclair Dolphins Swim Team, where he helped develop multiple 12 and Under YMCA State Champions, as well as assisted numerous swimmers to attain YMCA National Championship qualifying times, including two YMCA National Champions. Matt also has previous Head Coaching experience which began in 2006 at the YMCA of Greater Bergen County, and again in 2010 as the Head Coach of the Wayne YMHA.  In addition to coaching, Matt has served on the NJ Swimming Board of Directors as the Coaches Representative for the last two years.

His goal is to make sure that each athlete understands that success, whether it be in the pool or in life, is earned through their own choices. Matt understands that success is measured in many different ways, and devotes his time to helping everyone reach their goals.

Matt promotes a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for every swimmer that walks on deck. His hope is that when our athletes graduate from the program, they leave not only as fast swimmers, but as strong, caring, and responsible young adults.

Walter Mager Senior Prep-Lead
Ashley Singewald Junior 1- Lead

Coach Ashley is excited leading our youngest swimmers in Junior 1!  She has a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Montclair State University. Her swimming experience started at a young age when she joined the Randolph YMCA swim team.  Coach Ashley continued her swimming career with Montclair State University.  Her love of swimming expanded to coaching where she has been an assistant coach for the Roxbury Racers Swim Team at Horseshoe Lake for the last five summer seasons. Last year she returned to RANY to help with the younger groups.  For Coach Ashley, swimming is a sport that takes a lot of mental and physical strength, but it also brings a lot of joy and happiness when you know that your hard work is paying off. Coach Ashley loves coaching because you get to see first-hand how your swimmers are improving and it is great to just see the smiles on their faces through all their hard work.  RANY is like family to Coach Ashley and is glad to be part of a program that has had such a positive experience in her life.

Karin Lloyd Assistant Coach

Coach Karin is excited to step into a new role on RANY.  Her previous coaching experience includes being the 8 and Under Coach of the West Morris YMCA and spent 10 years as the Head Age Group Coach of the Crimson Aquatic Club.  She was also in charge of the Pre-Competitive Stroke Clinic for the Morristown-Beard Swim School.  Her swimming experience includes summer swimming, High School, and was a National Team Member of the West Morris YMCA.  She went on to swim for Glassboro College before a swimming injury caused her to end her time as a competitive athlete.  This experience has shaped her steadfast philosophy of technique as a foundation for speed. Coach Karin believes that proper stroke mechanics must be the first and most important step for fast swimming.  Through a system of repetitive corrections followed by effusive praise when accomplished, her goal is for each swimmer to love learning the correct skills so that they may reach their full potential.
