Kingston YMCA Hurricanes Swim Club: Our Coaches


Joe Leirey - Head Coach 

Coach Joe has served as coach or head coach for Kingston Hurricanes Swim Club since 1984.  Joe is a graduate of Kingston High School and Cortland State University.  During his high school tenure, Joe swam for Kingston High School three seasons and worked at the Kingston YMCA teaching swim lessons and serving as the Assistant Swim Coach for the 1977-78 seasons.  At Cortland, he became Assistant Coach of Cortland’s YMCA Stingers where he was supervised by Head Coach Dick Williams. During his stay with the Stingers, Joe helped conduct two YMCA State Meets and he went to Y Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on three separate occasions.  One year, their team earned “Top 10” status in our nation.  After graduating from Cortland in 1983, Joe returned to Kingston and began coaching the Hurricanes with Anne Butts.  Throughout the years, Joe has been very involved in the Kingston swimming community and his other activities currently include; KHS Varsity Swim Coach, Hurley Tiger Sharks Head Coach, Lifeguard instructor and WSI instructor.  Joe resides in Kingston with his wife Jean and their three daughters; Katherine, Erin, and Amy.

Stephanie Chan Haver

Coach Stephanie is originally from the Rochester area. She was a club swimmer for the Fairport Area Swim Team (FAST) and NYS qualifier in high school. She swam for SUNY Oswego where she was a NCAA qualifier and Academic All American. Stephanie also taught for the Learn to Swim program for the Oswego Lakers Swim Club. While attending grad school in Albany, she was an age group coach for the Clifton Park Piranhas during their 2009-2010 start-up season. Stephanie started with the Kingston Hurricanes in 2014. She is a school psychologist for the Rondout Valley Central School District. Stephanie and Ryan have two children, Thomas and Caroline. 

Ryan Haver

Coach Ryan began his competitive swimming career as a member of the Kingston Tigers.  During his time with the Tigers, Coach Ryan was both a section 9 finalist as well as a part of NYS qualifying relay teams.  As a graduate of Kingston High school, he went on to swim for SUNY Oswego.  While with the Oswego Lakers, coach Ryan was a team captain for both his Junior and Senior years as well as a 15-time SUNYAC finalist.  In 2017, Coach Ryan started a Varsity girls swim team in Wallkill, NY.  Ryan has been teaching biology at the Wallkill Middle School since 2007.  Coach Ryan and Stephanie have two children, Thomas and Caroline.

Emily Gulitti

Coach Emily Gulitti has been a swimmer for 15 years. She has began swimming for the Rosendale Rapids at age 8 and 12 years later, she coached for the team in the summer of 2015. Emily swam for the New Paltz Hawks year round, and in the fall she would also swim for the Kingston Varsity Team. She was the captain in her senior year at KHS and had a successful season. After graduation, Emily went to SUNY Potsdam and for the next four years she has swam for the Bears. As a student-athlete, Emily majored in Exercise Science and minored in Community Health, pursuing her interest in health and sports. Emily has a strong interest in the area of strength and conditioning and how dryland can improve one’s swimming. As one of the coaches this year Emily is looking forward to joining the Kingston Hurricanes and helping swimmers in and out of the pool.

Matthew Kessler

Coach Matt has started competitive swimming in sixth grade, swam varsity for Cornwall Central High School. Graduated in 2014. Currently finishing last year at SUNY New Paltz as an English Education major. Competes for the New Paltz Hawks collegiate team as a freestyle/backstroke/IM specialist. Has coached for the Shawangunk Masters Swimming Association, New York Sharks Aquatics, and the Rosendale Rapids. Passions include playing sports, hiking, reading, and writing.
