HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marietta Marlins wrapped up their 2018-2019 USA Swimming short course season at the West Virginia LSC Championship at the Cam Henderson Center on the campus of Marshall University on Sunday.

Leading the way for the Marlins was Olivia Buttrey (7). Olivia was the high point winner in the 8 & Under age group with 52 total points. Olivia finished first in the 8 & Under events of: 100 Individual Medley, 50 Freestyle, 50 Backstroke, 50 Butterfly and 100 Freestyle. She was second in the 50 breaststroke, and helped her 200 Free relay team and 200 Medley relay team to two 3rd place finishes.

“Olivia had a fantastic meet,” said Marlins Head Coach Ryan Zundell. “It has been a difficult season for all our swimmers with all the traveling for practices, so to see Olivia get rewarded like this is fantastic. She has a bright future!”

On the boys side for the Marlins, Nate Snyder (12) lead the team with 57 points and finished 3rd in the 11-12 age group. Nate won the 1000 freestyle and placed second in the 1650 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Nate also made his Great Lake Zone YMCA time cuts for the 200 free, 100 free and 500 free.

“Nate always steps up his performances at the big meets,” Zundell said. “Even though he made those time cuts I am 100% positive that breaking a minute in the 100 freestyle was the highlight of his weekend. He had been so close all season and to finally do it on the biggest stage means a lot to him. As a coach I couldn’t be more proud.”

Overall the Marlins swimmers had 77 lifetime best swims out of 108 races (71%), with the women’s team finishing 6th and the men’s team finishing 7th with and overall team finish of 6th.

Zundell says his team has been through so much and this was a great end to a difficult season.

“In January we were really uncertain if we could even finish this season without a pool, let alone have these type of swims in our biggest meet. It just goes to show the type of kids and families we have involved in this swim program. I am so happy to be able to coach this group of kids.”

Other highlights from the Marlins this past weekend were:

Mason Francis (12):  2nd in the 50 Fly, 3rd in the 50 Breaststroke and scoring 29 points

Madilyn Buttrey (10): 3rd in the 200 IM, top 8 in 7 other events and scoring 19.5 points
