COMPETITIVE YOUTH PROGRAM

Our sport is governed by the Rules of Unites States Synchronized Swimming & it’s international governing body, FINA. 

Coaches decide which squad each athlete is placed in.  Many factors go into this decision including skills of the athlete, where they will do best and have appropriate growth and challenges.

Novice

This is the beginning level that offers training for swimmers of all ages (up to 20) and abilities. Athletes get their first experience with competition at this level.  Novice has the fewest practice hours but still offers skill development with age specific training for all athletes. It is geared toward challenging and developing each individual to the best of their abilities. Most new members to the sport begin at the Novice level at practice and competitions before joining a higher level team. This team competes only in the local area and has 1-4 competitions during the season. This group is a step above our Mermaid and Mermen program. 

Novice swimmers compete with Figures & Technical Routines:

  • Four figures which are sets of defined body positions and the movement (transitions) between those body positions.
  • Technical routines are set to music and have required elements included.
  • Athletes are usually in their first-third year of the sport depending upon age and other factors.
  • Smaller age groupings in competition - usually local competition only.

Cost: $185/month ($125/month Club dues + THPRD Mandated Lane Fee: $60/month)

Requires $50 annual "Athlete" membership with USA Synchro (link), our national governing body (and liability insurance provider)

 

Intermediate B

This squad offers training for swimmers of all ages (up to 20) and ability levels.  Intermediate B offers skill development and age specific training for athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities. Some new members to the sport begin can begin on the Intermediate squad. This team competes primarily in the Pacific Northwest, but at times will travel to other meets in the West Coast. This group is a step above our Novice program

Intermediates compete with Figures and Technical Routines:

  • This is the B Team, as determined by the coach during tryouts. During the season athletes have a chance to work towards the Intermediate A team. 
  • Technical routines set to music with required elements; limited lifts permitted in some team routines.
  • Athletes are usually in their first-third year of the sport depending upon age and other factors.
  • Smaller age groupings in competition - local, regional and sometimes zone competition.

Cost: $225/month ($165/month Club dues + THPRD Mandated Lane Fee: $60/month)

Intermediate A

This squad offers everything from the Intermediate B level, but with more hours and more advanced skills development. This is the A Team. A team requires top attendance, focus, work ethic, and skills at the intermediate level. If figure scores drop significantly below the group's average or attendance drops there is a chance to move to the Intermediate B Team. 

Cost: $255/month ($195/month Club dues + THPRD Mandated Lane Fee: $60/month)

Age Group (12 and Under)

Age Group competition is the beginning of elite athlete training. This group also competes within the Pacific Northwest, West Coast and at National competitions. This is the team which develops skills to move them to a higher level of competitions. Flexibility is important, this group is recommended to work on hyper-extension of their already flat splits.  Coaches may decide to move a swimmer younger than 12 years up to the next age group.  

This team competes Figures and Free Routines:

  • 2 compulsory figures; 2 of 6 additional figures determined 72 hours prior to competition.
  • Free routines, no technical elements, lifts and throws permitted.
  • All ages 12 & Under compete against each other.
  • Athletes are usually in their second-fourth year of the sport, coach’s decision.
  • Local, Regional,  Zone and National competition

Cost: $295/month ($235/month Club dues + THPRD Mandated Lane Fee: $60/month)

Age Group (13 and Over)

At this level, athletes are looking to round out elite athletic skills. These athletes cross-train in cross country, plyometrics, weight training, pilates, acrobatics and Russian Ballet. They travel across the country to compete at other events such as Invitationals, Zones, National Championships and National Team Competitions. These athletes are also assigned a younger sister(s) to maintain a close relationship to throughout the year.

Athletes compete Figures, Technical Skills and Free Routines:

  • 2 compulsory figures; 2 of 6 additional figures determined 72 hours prior to competition.
  • Free routines, no technical elements, lifts and throws permitted.
  • Athletes 13-15 years of age compete against each other and 16-19 years compete against each other.
  • Athletes are usually in their 2nd-4th year of the sport, coaches decision.
  • Local, Regional, Zone & National competition; also technical skills competitions.

Cost: $295/month ($235/month Club dues + THPRD Mandated Lane Fee: $60/month)

Other Expenses - Competitive Athletes

There are other fees and expenses throughout the year.  Contact your athlete's coach for details.

You are individually responsible for:

  • USA Synchro Competitive Athlete Membership.  USA Synchro is the national organizing body for Synchronized Swimming.  Includes insurance to protect your athlete and THS in case of injury.  Prices and link to join is listed under each category, above.
  • Maintaining an account with Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD).  Your athlete will use the supplied card to check in at the front desk at each practice.  Note: THS athletes are no longer required to purchase an out-of-district assessment from THPRD.

You will be billed by THS for:

  • Annual membership to the Oregon Association of Synchronized Swimming (organizes local meets) ... Approximately $20/yr.  
  • Swim Suits for Routines (the decorated ones), typically ordered by the Coach and billed to the athlete.
  • Athletic Supplies

For athletes attending out-of-town meets:

  • Shared expenses, divided by participating athletes: You will be billed by THS for Coach Salary & Expenses, Food, Hotel, Rental Cars, Bus Rental, Travel Expenses for Chaperones, etc.
  • Individual expenses: Airfare for your athlete.
